2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumI知 done with Bernie Sanders: Why this democratic socialist is voting for Hillary Clinton
Ive been a personal fan of Senator Bernie Sanders since my political awakening in college. I was raised in an evangelical Republican household and fed a diet of capitalist ideology for as long as I could remember. I began shifting toward the Democratic Party in my early teens but still got nervous when I heard the word socialism. It wasnt a reasoned response, just a knee-jerk reaction. In truth, I was scared that I might be a socialist. If anyone found out, Id never be taken seriously again.
A few years later, I was living in a Northeastern University campus apartment in Boston. I had cable for the first time in my life. I was watching a late-night talk show. This brash, quirky senator with a thick Brooklyn accent explained that, not only was he an elected official with no party affiliation, hes a democratic socialist!
I listened to him outline the most basic explanation of democratic socialism and realized I couldnt run from it any longer. I was clearly a democratic socialist and always had been. My allegiance isnt to an unrestrained free market, but a deeply-held position that everyone is entitled to a roof over their heads, food to eat, a solid education and good medical care as a moral right. If we cannot be guaranteed basic dignity under the law, whats the point of the whole enterprise?
Sen. Sanders agreed with me, and he wasnt afraid to say so loudly I wanted him to be president and feared America would never accept a guy like him. Fast-forward to 2016, and I found myself dead wrong. The American public revolted against the establishment wings of both parties. The United States was now captivated by this plucky socialist, almost as captivated as theyd become with an orange-haired demagogue who had a bizarre fixation on Mexican rapists.
It was Bernies time to shine. But I wasnt feeling the Bern anymore.

(146,336 posts)This OP is quoting someone who can vote here. It's not Sid's words. Sid is a DUer, so he's free to post here. He makes no secret about being Canadian. So, I'm not sure what your point is in asking the question.
I know that you're aware of his Canadian citizenship. Most DUers are aware of that. How does that have anything to do with the article referenced in the OP?

The title is misleading, a review of the author's twitter reveals that he has been a Hillary supporter since the start of her campaign.

(708 posts)But I would never post such a disingenuous post such as this.
That article really is in poor taste.
It's fine to have differences and debates, but to be completely dishonest in your position is bordering on evil. Honor is important among my friends and I.
I hope Hillary Clinton supporters would be better than this. I realize this person is probably paid to act like this.

Bernie was on point with Black Live Matter before the NN disruption.
On capitalism:
From the author: "For every Charles Koch, theres a Bill Gates."
First thing, Bill Gates is better than Koch, but not the inverse. He has some problems with his education.
But even if Bill Gates was actually spending all his money on truly liberal causes, there is no way an honest person can say that for every bad guy with billions there is an equivalent good guy with billions. If there were, we'd be in much better shape.
On truth
Politifact says they are about even on truthfulness, but I've had problems with Politifact for a long time because the Annenberg Foundation controls it and they have an establishment agenda.
Basically, this author is full of shite, but I'm sure the HRC fans will lap it up.

(45,120 posts)I call him a hack because he is a liar, he has been a Hillary supporter since way back in 08. I think it's hilarious when people forget that what they write on the internet is there and can be seen.
Dem2
(8,168 posts)That's OK, I read it in context for what it is, an article with a perspective different than my own that I found interesting.
You are not required to like it (since you pooh-poohed it, I'm assuming you didn't read it.)
Autumn
(45,120 posts)and posting a nasty smear piece in the process. Yeah I read it, then found out he's a liar. He has been a Hillary supporter all along. Back when she lost in her first run for president he supported her then . I'm not surprised at all the you defend his lies. I repeat he's a liar and stupid thinking his history was invisible.
Dem2
(8,168 posts)It's cool, I won't judge you for having doubts about the person's perspective.
I found it interesting. I would encourage you to post the lies though, we can discuss them if you like.
Autumn
(45,120 posts)YMMV which I'm sure it does. I'm done with discussing anything with you. I have an aversion to people who decide that lies are to be applauded.
Dem2
(8,168 posts)I will admit that I will never be convinced to think EITHER/OR, and that's why you're bailing out of this conversation.
Surely you can see that this is an indictment of your limited ability to think outside limited "Bernie only" perspective. I'd call out the "Hillary only" perspective too, but 100% of Hillary supporters here have said they'd support Bernie if he's nominated, this is hardly true when looked at the other way.

Oh, never mind . . . guess he wasn't a Bernie supporter after all, or even an Obama supporter . . . just another white guy who thinks Hillary's "I'm 'with you' right up to the line where white folks turn against you" perspective on racial justice is better than even President Obama's.

(1,235 posts)Combine that with the part on "Truth" where he falls in line with the biased 'fact checkers' who like the media make false comparisons ... treating things that Sanders may have misspoke on minor issues as though they were equal to bald faced lies on important issues by Clinton. Jesus, even over the last two days these "fact checkers", gave Bernie 3 Pinocchios for telling the truth about Hillary on Oil money, then gave Bernie 4 Pinocchios for saying his summary tax form was made already out there (which it is, but they took the one part of the conversation out of context, ignored that Bernie explained why the full tax reforms were not already available, and used his words on the summary form as though he were talking about the full forms.)
