Hillary Clinton Voices Support For $12 Minimum Wage, But Balks At $15

Her hesitance on $15 may displease progressives — but it will relieve businesses that are getting bowled over by minimum wage campaigns.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/hillary-clinton-12-minimum-wage_us_55ba7988e4b0b23e3ce1f307
WASHINGTON — Putting some distance between herself and other Democratic presidential hopefuls, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton voiced support Thursday for a proposal to raise the federal minimum wage to $12, suggesting that a more ambitious proposal of $15 wouldn’t be realistic on Capitol Hill.

Speaking to reporters after her meeting with the executive council of the AFL-CIO labor federation, Clinton was asked what the minimum wage should be raised to from its current level of $7.25. She answered by discussing a measure put forth in Congress by Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.) and Rep. Bobby Scott (D-Va.) that would hike the minimum wage to $12 and tie it to an inflation index.

“I think it’s going to be important that we set a national minimum, but then we get out of the way of cities and states that believe that they can and should go higher,” she said.

Pressed on whether $12 was better than a competing Democratic proposal of $15, Clinton suggested the more modest increase is also the more viable one politically.

Most Americans not (yet or still) working for minimum wage are comfortable ignoring the plight of those who do. Hillary Clinton is the candidate for maybe doing someething about it, but not too much. She's the candidate for not understanding that a higher minimum wage benefits all of us.

We accept the crumbs from those we elect that see to their own needs above ours. You want to call it pandering, then call it pandering.

I see a man who sees the needs of these who have lost so much of their wealth and are barely hanging on. He is willing to get out there and fight side by side with them to get a paltry 15 dollars an hour.

While she panders to business and says 12 dollars is enough.

Someones pandering all right.

How could anyone come to any other conclusion after listening to the incredible ignorance that passes for political discussion in almost all venues these days?

Most people literally cannot identify their allies or their enemies but are shooting angrily away at moving shapes in a mental fog.

$15/hr might be absorbed in economies like NYC, Los Angeles and Seattle but would be devastating to businesses in Shreveport, Memphis and Birmingham. Hillary is being honest with the people. $12 is a reasonable target, $15 is just politically pandering.

Wearing that magical D while pretending to fight for for people while looking out for his needs. He would still be doing that if the House hadn't censured him for his ethics . Good thing he used that revolving door and became a banking lobbyist, it really increased his wealth.

Barney is the perfect example of the problem with democrats that we keep electing over and over again. The crumbs theay toss down to us remain the same while their life gets better.

Your post shows how truly weak her stance and supporters are. I see know reason why I would want to unite with a group willing to give up a fight before it happens. If it were up to you weak kneed corporate dems women wouldn't be voting and we would still be a colony of England. My goodness I haven't seen a bigger group of roll over and lick their master's boots type individuals in some time. You don't immediately take away 3 dollars from the negotiating table because you are worried about what the gop might think. Screw them. You repeatedly beat the $15 dollars over their thick heads until they compromise at a greater number than you wanted. Hell NY and California are doing it. Seattle has. Yet you roll over dems wouldn't want to ruffle the feathers of her Corporate Majesty's donor base. It's dems like you and her that make me question why I even stick up for the party. The antithesis of what our party should do is what you accept. Shameful.

The American labor force does not want a nationally fractured, balkanized minimum wage, with some areas giving and some areas taking away. $15 an hour, for labor, everywhere, with no excuses or backpedaling or asterisks. Work is work, and work deserves fair pay. There are not that many difference in cost of living, things like gas, education, medical care, child care, food and even rents, are going up everywhere. To say that it is less expensive to live in one place rather than another place is an excuse used to dampen wage growth. As soon as someone starts muttering into their sleeve about the "cost of living" they are going to follow up with an excuse as to why they can't pay a fair wage for labor.

REASON FOR ALERT

This post is disruptive, hurtful, rude, insensitive, over-the-top, or otherwise inappropriate.

ALERTER'S COMMENTS

Skinner says "I think it is important that we begin to tone down the most divisive and over-the-top rhetoric about our primary candidates." Calling one of our Dem. candidates "despicable" and "enemy of the poor and middle class" is certainly over-the-top.

You served on a randomly-selected Jury of DU members which reviewed this post. The review was completed at Mon Apr 4, 2016, 04:24 PM, and the Jury voted 2-5 to LEAVE IT.

Juror #1 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #2 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: Yes, need to tone down divisive rhetoric, but alerting this post is not the way. In any case, "despicable" is not an over the top term, nor are "right of center" or "enemy of poor
Juror #3 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #4 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: Stop this.
Juror #5 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: I voted to hide a post calling Sanders a POS the other day and it didn't get hidden. I was literally the only one that voted to hide it. I voted to hide a post calling Hilary a shill the other day and I was the ONLY one to hide it.

If we were truly going to tone down our divisive rhetoric, then I think we should start with not allowing people who say such things over and over and over and over and over (some people have 12 fucking hides) to keep saying those things.

So, yeah, enemy of the poor and middle class is very mild thing to call Clinton and no one gives a shit about what we call the candidates. So, sorry, maybe I'm feeling completely despondent and cynical today, but fuck it... I'm not hiding this.
Juror #6 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: We've been letting similar posts deriding Sanders stand. The posts language is very tough but it isn't off topic, nor does it insult anyone here at DU. Leave it alone.
Juror #7 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: Skinner also granted amnesty to the worst of the worst of this site.

It's just like Walter Peck shutting down the Containment Unit. But at least that ended with the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man.

Thank you very much for participating in our Jury system, and we hope you will be able to participate again in the future.
