Huma Abedin On Her Emails Being Out There: 'Terrifying'

By ELIZA COLLINS 04/01/16 05:47 PM EDT

Huma Abedin hasn’t freshly read any of her email exchanges with Hillary Clinton that have been released by the State Department, but the longtime Clinton aide said it is "terrifying" to know that the messages are out there.

“It’s something I can’t really think about, but I can’t even imagine what’s in those emails. But I’m sure I would probably be mortified. I have no idea. I haven’t read any of them,” Abedin, who served as one of Clinton's top aides at State, said in an interview with the podcast "Call Your Girlfriend."

The State Department publicly released thousands of emails from Clinton, including many messages to her aides, after it was discovered that she used a private email server during her four-year tenure as secretary of state. Clinton has said that, looking back, it wasn't the best decision, but that she did violate any rules or laws. The FBI is investigating the unusual server setup.

In the interview, Abedin was also asked about the infamous fax emails in which she is trying to coach Clinton through using a secure fax machine. Abedin said the exchange showed “a little bit of her frustration because it wasn’t working, and my frustration that she couldn’t figure it out or whatever it was.”

“It wasn’t unusual when secure faxes were coming through that we had some challenges,” she said, adding that she didn’t remember that specific moment until the email made the headlines.

She has gained many Perks working for Hillary through the years. That she hasn't read through the E-Mail Releases for how she could be implicated is astonishing!

How Huma Abedin Operated at the Center of the Clinton Universe
By Rosalind S. Helderman and Tom Hamburger August 27, 2015

As Hillary Rodham Clinton was preparing for her farewell international trip as secretary of state, her close aide and confidante Huma Abedin e-mailed a small number of longtime political allies to help arrange an intimate get-together at a private club in Dublin.

“Maybe we can all gather for drinks/dinner and HRC can come join for as long as she can?” Abedin wrote.

The December 2012 event showcased the unique position that Abedin occupied at the apex of the Clintons’ public and private worlds during the final six months of Hillary Clinton’s tenure heading the State Department.

At the time, Abedin held four jobs with four different employers — an arrangement allowed by a special government designation she held permitting outside employment. And each job had a connection to the Dublin dinner.

The invitation was sent from Abedin’s State Department account as Clinton planned for an official trip in her role as secretary. The dinner was attended by the chief executive of the private consulting firm Teneo, which has close ties to the Clintons and employed Abedin as an adviser. Seated around the tables were donors to Hillary Clinton’s campaigns as well as to the Clinton Foundation, where Abedin was a contractor preparing for Clinton’s eventual transition to the charity. And Clinton, who was also paying Abedin out of personal funds to prepare for her transition from secretary of state to private life, showed up for about an hour.

New interviews and documents, including the e-mails about the Ireland dinner, provide additional details about some of Abedin’s activities during those months and how her overlapping roles make it difficult to determine when she was working for the public and when her work was benefiting a private interest. Now, Abedin’s work during that time is becoming a central element in several controversies dogging Clinton’s presidential campaign.

Ann: Oh my God, that is a power circle. [Laughter] You’re killing us. You’re killing us.

We are seriously falling out in separate studios. Okay, if you and Hillary had a

podcast like Call Your Girlfriend what would you talk about?

Huma: Okay, food. Food. Definitely food.

Ann: Oh my God.

Huma: Because we’re obsessed with food. It’s a joke on the campaign. Whenever we

have a chance and it’s meal time, it is always – and particularly we’re so lucky to

be able to be on an airplane where we have this wonderful woman who provides

us with as nutritious of meals as possible. But we are obsessed with food and we

look forward to it and what is it? And I want to know the menu. And then we

enjoy it. So we talk about food. We talk about fashion. And we sometimes – we’ll

often do celebrity gossip, although very often we’ll be looking through pages and

say “Who are these people?” We’re not sure. But there’s plenty of people we

love. So we just – you know, it’s fun, but I would say food is probably top of the

list. Maybe food and shoes? Maybe food and shoes.

Ann: Okay, I have to skip ahead because we have a question later in the rapid fire

which is what is your power snack? Which is the natural follow-up to that

question.

(30:05)

Huma: Okay, you know, it’s any power bar. You know, I did Kind. I’m on Quest Bars

now really because it’s like . . .

Amina: Oh man, Quest Bar. Good bar.

Huma: Yeah, Quest Bar I think is my favorite. I like the cookies and cream I think

probably the most and sometimes like the double chocolate brownie. But I think

that it’s the easiest thing to throw it in my bag. And I think I mentioned this

earlier, sometimes you don’t know when your next meal is, so it’s the safest thing

to pack.

Amina: That’s amazing. What’s your pump-up song?

Huma

Huma: You know what it’s been recently? It’s Andra Day’s Rise Up. I just . . .

Amina: Ooh, good choice.

Huma: Oh God, I love her and her voice. I feel so empowered when I listen to that song.

Ann: Okay. You’ve said that you love the show Veep.

Huma: Yes.

Ann: Do you identify with the Tony Hale character at all?

Huma: Okay, so what I love . . . [Laughs] So there’s lots of shows that I love. The

problem is we hardly ever – and I do love Veep. I watch everything. I watch

Veep. I watch Downton Abbey. I watch Scandal. I watch Good Wife. I watch . . .

I mean the list is long. Here’s the problem: I’m so behind on everything that now

if we’re traveling, I’ll be at a hotel room in Iowa and I’ll turn the TV on. I’ll be

totally confused. I’ll be like wait a minute. Wait, how did this happen? Kerry

Washington’s living in the White House? What? Because I completely lost track

of where we are – where they are in the seasons.

Do I identify with the character? I identify with the whole show because I think to

me it’s the closest thing to what Washington is and it’s just sort of all the things

that people don’t want to say they say on that show and it’s done in such a funny

way. But he is very, very funny and I don’t know that I identify with him but he

certainly sets a very high standard for anybody who does that job.

Amina: I’m so excited for you to catch up on Good Wife because for me, and when the

emails were leaked, when I found out that you all watched Good Wife, that’s the

only thing I cared about.

Huma: That was in the emails?

Amina: This is the biggest revelation.

Ann: We got excited.

Amina: And I can’t wait for you to catch up because it’s been a rollercoaster and it’s

ending in five episodes and it’s kind of crazy.

Huma: Oh my God, don’t tell me what happens.

Amina: Oh, I won’t tell you. You’re going to die. It’s amazing.

I don't honestly know why a person of such high intelligence and passion could so thoughtlessly but herself in this situation.

I wonder if it makes voters question her judgment and ability to really serve the country with confidence and thoughtfulness.

Very careless, sloppy, and I see no benefit for all the effort that went into this server-in-the-basement way of doing official business.

I think you're right.

Maybe no harm was done, but harm done isn't the measure of a crime, or of negligence.

A drunk driver isn't punished only when there are damages or injury, they are punished for the carelessness and bad judgement that sets up dangerous conditions.

Nonetheless, for all she had going for her, she really didn't need to do this thing with emails, and her trail of excuses about convenience and other people did it is pathetic.

Thank God we have a strong alternative who has a chance of taking this from her.
