NYT Editorial: Christopher Murphy for Connecticut

The battle to replace the retiring Senator Joseph Lieberman has become one of the toughest and most crucial in the country. Republicans have again chosen the former wrestling executive Linda McMahon, who lost the Senate race in 2010 to Richard Blumenthal despite spending $50 million of her own money. This time, she is spending at least $27 million. Representative Christopher Murphy, the Democratic candidate, has been trying to break through her attack ads, which blanket Connecticut airwaves.

Mr. Murphy, a thoughtful and productive public servant, spent nearly six solid years in Congress, with an almost perfect voting record. He was a strong voice for ending the war in Iraq and worked diligently on the committee that helped draft the health care reforms. He also helps run a bipartisan group in the House, the Center Aisle Caucus, that tries to find common ground between the two parties.

Ms. McMahon has tried to soften her earlier image as the tough, no-holds-barred chief executive of World Wrestling Entertainment. She has promised to overturn the Affordable Care Act, and has supported the infamous Blunt amendment that would have allowed employers to refuse to cover contraception. She says she will focus on policies that improve the economy and create jobs.

Her campaign has spent a lot of its energies on demonizing Mr. Murphy for failing to pay personal bills and for getting a break on a home-equity loan despite those lapses. Mr. Murphy denies there was any favoritism in the loan and has said that these “screw-ups” were remedied quickly. Ms. McMahon and her husband are no strangers to financial issues: they declared bankruptcy in 1976 while owing $1 million to 26 creditors. And she has been late paying property taxes, most recently this year on a luxury condominium in Stamford.

We endorse Christopher Murphy for the Senate.
