2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumAll the people voting Romney...
I hear their endless tirades against President Obama...he's black, he's a Muslim, he's a Socialist, blah, blah, blah.
But what you never hear them say is what they think Romney/Ryan are going to DO for THEM, or for the country. And the sad part is that they will all benefit from changes Obama has made, from tax cuts for the middle class to increased insurance coverage.
The one phrase that has irritated the shit out of me this election cycle is the Republican war-cry "take our country back." Take it back from whom? Democrats? Gays and lesbians? Blacks? Immigrants?
Sorry, just a little post ice-cream, pre-bedtime rant.

(53,075 posts)Moreover, most have no familiarity with his policies. They are inconsistent ideologically: insisting Obama is a war monger and in the pocket of the rich. Their information is almost never factual. They say Obama caused the economic crisis, that unemployment is worse under him. Essentially they are idiots who ape whatever they hear on Fox and Rush. A healthy percentage are just plain crazy.

(10,893 posts)"taken away our freedom" and "disobeyed the Constitution". Taken away our freedoms how? Disobeyed the Constitution how? Everybody still has their guns, their right to free speech, their crappy for-profit health care, etc.
One thing that they never mention, though, is spending freedom. Under Obama, we have more spending freedom than we did under Bush/Cheney and how we would under Romney/Ryan. What I mean is that taxes on lower income Americans are lower under Obama than they would be under a Republican president, and we still have our social programs like social security and food stamps to provide us financial assistance. Republicans and fiscal libertarians want to cut all of that in favor of tax cuts for the top 1%, thus incinerating the spending freedom of the bottom 99%. Whenever the right-wing wants to paint it as if they're the ones who fight for "freedom", just remember--what they really mean is freedom for 1% of Americans to monopolize the country.

(39 posts)...Obama has somehow taken their freedoms. They are simply parroting what's been said to them until they've embraced it without thinking through what, exactly, Obama has taken away. Oh, wait! I can think of one thing that my Tea-loving bro-in-law is always harping on: Obama is keeping them from outlawing abortion. As the bro-in-law harps endlessly "Obama has the blood of innocent millions on his hands." I ask him, since abortions were legal under Reagan too, doesn't Reagan also have 'the blood of innocent millions on his hands?' -- the logic escapes him on that one
I'm dead weary of that talking point but it erupts from the bro-in-law with each encounter. It never occurs to him and his ilk that in denying the right to abortion, others lose a freedom. No, it's always the fetus who is missing out. Only the fetus. Funny...when that fetus is born, and until it gets a job or has a parent who can successfully provide for it, it's nothing but a worthless moocher, but they don't extrapolate down that logic path either.

(32,723 posts)There are still white people who believe that the only way for black people or gay people or Latinos to get equal rights and freedom is for white people to lose their rights and freedom. Believe it or not, there are some white people who believe black people are going to get even for slavery by making white people slaves. They see a black president and panic and the right-wing knows this and feeds into that fear and then swoops in and says they will protect the white race and meanwhile while all of this is going on native Americans are laughing their asses off.

(53,075 posts)Because they never heard of EOs before Fox started harping on them. They also insist Obamacare violates the constitution ( never mind the SCOTUS ruling). They claim he is trying to take away first amendment rights (Libya) and gun rights. Basically they are insane people, and really really stupid.
I've spent too much time on Yahoo reading what these nut jobs post.

Your rant is on target. But, chocolate is good. Endorphins are good. I like a touch of brandy with the chocolate sauce on the ice cream. That way you get multiple sins, and extra endorphins.
Myself, I just drink right out of the brandy bottle.
Nice post.

(8,434 posts)I'm sick of it!
I got into a (verbal) fight with someone the other day. Their taxes are LOWER than they were 4 years ago. Pull out your tax returns for the last 7 years and do the math. You're paying less! If not, go fuck yourself, you make enough to not be whining about taxes.

When was the last time you looked at your paystub?

(8,434 posts)I look at every stub. I check each and every deduction for taxes and health ins.
Then I calculate what tax rate I'm paying if it's not a number I expected.
I work overtime often and every now and then I don't get my full 40. I know down to the .10% of what I'm paying out in taxes every week.
I'm betting less than 1% does this though. If they did so, Obama would be sitting on a 30 point lead nationally.

(4,310 posts)that will not vote for Willard. I don't know what alternative
they have worked out but even Billy Graham giving willard
the nod won't change their minds.
Deep down I don't believe a lot of these people believe Obama
is a Muslim. I think it's an excuse for their racism.
Seniors, when they walk in that booth are putting their S.S
and medicare on the line. They may hate Obama, but they
love that check every month and they love their medicare.
Willard said in the first debate if you were over 60, you
had nothing to worry about. Wonder what all those 50 plus
thought about that statement? I'll bet they twitched when
they heard it.

(53,075 posts)That helps Obama. If someone Is a right winger who won't vote for Obama I encourage them to vote for a gary Johnson or write in Ron Paul. I remind them how disrespectfully they were treated at The RNC. A lot of those Paul delegates will not be voting for Romney. Every vote against Romney helps us.

My parents are voting Republican~
My sister and I have consistently tried talking with them, which ALWAYS starts a major argument.
They just don't get it, they continue to vote against their own best interests.
It's very disheartening.

(5,477 posts)One is a VP at a healthcare company that stands to make more money with the repeal of Obamacare and the other is a banker who makes $2 million/year and stands to have a huge tax cut. In their minds, they are voting in their own interests.
