MADISON, Wis.Bernie Sanders is coming to this liberal university town tomorrow for a rally in an arena that seats 10,000. Last night, Chelsea Clinton drew about 100 to a field office down the road.
Only about a quarter of the crowd was college-aged. Several of them said theyre not supporting the Democratic front-runner, just politically curious.
I thought itd be cool to see her kid, so why not come out? said Jeung Bok Holmquist, 19, who is studying film at the University of Wisconsin.
She left still planning to vote for the Vermont senator in the states April 5 primary. Hes a socialist. Im into that, said Holmquist. And there are some things Hillary has done that are pretty questionable. In the 90s, she backed some pretty bad policies that kind of screwed over black people and stuff like that. Theres the argument that shes a woman and Im a woman, but Id rather agree with someones policies. (She added that she will vote for the former secretary of State over Donald Trump in the general election.)
Madison is a true liberal bastion. A Republican governor once famously described the capital city as 30 square miles surrounded by reality. It was intended as an insult, but locals have embraced it as an official motto. Sanders is looking to run up his margins here. The Clinton campaign is trying to make inroads.

(135,425 posts)These students think that the college thing will help them...but it's too late for them. Even assuming a liberal Congress can be assembled in, say, three elections, and get those dreams passed (and that's insane optimism on my part), you're eight years out from any change, pretty much.
I think a lot of young people do quite erroneously see the POTUS as a king. They don't realize that anything involving appropriations (like free college) HAS to go through Congress, and begin in the House, where the purse strings are held.
