Kluwe to debate 'empty chair' on marriage equality

Go ahead, make his day.

After a whirlwind media tour on the issue, which we detailed here Wednesday, Minnesota Vikings punter Chris Kluwe continues to put himself in the spotlight as an advocate for marriage equality. For his next move, Kluwe plans to take a page out of Clint Eastwood's recent playbook and debate an empty chair on the subject Friday afternoon.

Billed as "Chris Kluwe vs. The Chair," Kluwe will take the stage at downtown Minneapolis' The Brave New Workshop Comedy Theatre to share his views against Minnesota's Same Sex Marriage Amendment, Amendment 1, which if passed, would limit legal marriage in that state between a man and a woman.

In addition to Congresswoman Michelle Bachmann and numerous other politicians who support the amendment, organizers also invited Kluwe's former teammate Matt Birk to discuss the amendment. Since none of those people agreed to come to the event, Kluwe decided to appear with the chair and a local radio host serving as moderator.

TAKING A STAND: Chris Kluwe appears on cover of 'Out' magazine

Organizers couldn't have actually thought that Birk, a Minnesota native and ex-Vikings center who plays for the Baltimore Ravens, would appear at an event a little more than 36 hours before his team plays in Houston.

Now why does that sound familiar? Oh, yes, it's the only way George W. could win a debate (well, about half the time).
