Joe Walsh: abortion is never medically necessary to save the life of the mother

The Republican says abortion is never medically necessary to save the life of the mother

BY JILLIAN RAYFIELD

Rep. Joe Walsh, R-Ill., said a debate last night that he is against abortion “without exception,” even in cases of rape, incest, and when the life of the mother is in danger. When asked by reporters if he means that it’s never medically necessary to save a pregnant woman’s life, Walsh said “absolutely.”

“With modern technology and science, you can’t find one instance,” he said. “… There is no such exception as life of the mother, and as far as health of the mother, same thing.”

Walsh, who is running for reelection, was quoted by WGN Radio after a debate with Democrat Tammy Duckworth. Walsh’s theory about medical technology is something that anti-choice doctors have been arguing for some time, including before a recent House subcommittee over D.C.’s proposed ban of abortions after 20 weeks.

Michael Greene, a professor at Harvard Medical School, told Salon that this argument is “blatantly false.”

Not all that long ago a colleague of mine was diagnosed with stomach cancer in her 3rd trimester. She faced a choice between immediate abortion and chemotherapy, or carrying the fetus to term and postponing chemo. A good Catholic, she chose the latter. Along with an empty desk at the office and a decimated family budget, she left behind a grieving widower and 4 motherless children.

If only they had known you were an expert oncologist, surely this tragedy would not have occurred. Especially since this single father is now raising 4 criminals instead of 3 good children. Perhaps your friend, Gov. Mitt Romney, could loan my friend his binder full of good professional women to help pay the bills and keep those children on the right path.

Sincerely,
MT

That vast area of knowledge just seems to be innate. I wonder if gene therapy could reduce medical training needed for doctors?

Having diabetes while pregnant can lead to preeclampsia in the mother (or hypertension). It can lead to death of the mother and the child.
I was diagnosed with my diabetes while I was pregnant with my second child. It was soon realized that I did not have gestational diabetes but real actual diabetes that would not go away. I was monitored every week with a fetal heart monitor and my blood pressure was checked every time as well.
Not to mention, ectopic pregnancies, toxoplasmosis, hemorrhaging due to placenta issues, etc can lead to the death of the mother. Science has come a long way but complications can and do still happen in 2012.

What a freaking idiot!!!!!

While he doesn't hold a doctorate (MD or PhD), he does have a Masters in public policy. Prior to receiving that, he studied acting at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute.

What this tells me is that, like most all aspiring thespians, he is a trained liar, and his primary drive in life is narcism. It also tells me that all of his tea party posturing amounts to theatrics for the craven purpose of amassing power and stature.

I really hope my faith in basic human intelligence isn't misplaced, and Duckworth kicks his ass back to community theater in November.
