Touting her "deep, personal commitment" to the "Jewish state," Clinton then said that "one of the first things Ill do in office is invite Israeli Prime Minister {Benjamin Netanyahu} to visit the White House."
The speech proved that, on matters of Israel, Clinton is "running to the right" of GOP front-runner Donald Trump, as noted by Mondoweiss' Philip Weiss, who wrote that the remarks were "filled with red meat for Israel supporters" and "contained scant reference to the peace process."
Though unsurprised by the candidate's vigorous support for the policies and tactics of the Israeli state, observers pointed to the remarks as a frightening indicator of what a Clinton presidency could mean for the Middle East.
In a statement to Common Dreams, Rebecca Vilkomerson, executive director of Jewish Voice for Peace, said that the speech "is a reminder of the current limits of the mainstream discourse on Israel, which rely on racist and Islamophobic tropes to justify unquestioning support for Israel."
"From Democrats to Republicans, the message is the same," Vilkomerson continued. "More arms for Israel, a stronger relationship between Israel and the U.S., no mention of Palestinian rights, and no recognition of the impossible contradiction of being both democratic and Jewish when the state is predicated on maintaining systems of unequal rights and rule by military occupation."

(39,451 posts)Reform Judaism remains the largest American Jewish movement, at 35 percent. Conservative Jews are 18 percent, Orthodox 10 percent, and groups such as Reconstructionist and Jewish Renewal make up 6 percent combined. Thirty percent of Jews do not identify with any denomination.
The Orthodox Jews support Israel no matter what. They love Bibi, they usually vote Republicans.
And there is the majority which falls under Reformed Jews, myself included. And I suppose Bernie falls into this category.
While we do support the state of Israel we support peace.
We want nothing more than a 2 state solution and for that reason we do not support Bibi at all. Many of us see him as the reason why anti-semitism is on the rise.
Add to that - Netanyahu has gone after progressive Jews.

Many of us feel conflicted because we do support Israel but cannot support the tactics of this regime.
Similar to how Americans felt after Bush/Cheney won a second term.
As a Jewish woman I am proud of Bernie for not pandering to this extreme lobby today.
As for Hillary, yes, she may be able to get the votes of the Orthodox Jews away from the gop, esp if their nominee is Trump...she may even get the votes of some Conservative Jews.
But since the majority of American Jews fall under Reform - they most likely will be standing with Bernie because of today.

(25,261 posts)AIPAC wants to hear certain things from the candidate and the candidate basically tells them those certain things. This is pandering at its best being encouraged by and organization that wants to be pandered to. I don't get it?
