2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumWell my hopes of some sort of relief from chronic pain was crushed with Hillary's "sweep"
and a single payer system which would allow me to have the testing for my ongoing headaches due to Hydrocephalus and find some sort of answer for my chronic neupathic pain from multiple spinal issues.
Now on top of that, I was even denied being able to participate in a chronic lower pain study due to my shunt for hydrocephalus yesterday. Imagine having to go to a clinical trial for help and not even being accepted to be a fucking guinea pig. Wonderful health care system....for some.
Then as I walked less that a half mile home from the train station because my wife was unable to get off of work, I had to drop to my knees several times to relieve the horrible pain throughout my spine and legs. I thought I may have to get some help to get home even though I was two blocks away. It took over an hour for that walk.
As I was on the sidewalk on my knees I though I have no choice and must go back on the oxycodone. Then after a very bad night I wake up and read about the CDC.............
http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/2016/03/15/cdc-issues-new-guidelines-opiate-prescribing-reduce-abuse-overdoses/81809704/
The nation's top federal health agency urged doctors to avoid prescribing powerful opiate painkillers for patients with chronic pain, saying the risks from such drugs far outweigh the benefits for most people.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in its first ever guidelines for dispensing the morphine-like, addictive drugs, such as Vicodin and OxyContin, said it took the action Tuesday to combat the nation's deadly prescription painkiller epidemic.
The guidelines carve out an exception for patients receiving cancer treatment or end-of-life care. When doctors determine that such drugs are necessary in other situations, the CDC advises doctors prescribe the lowest possible dose for the shortest amount of time.
About 40 Americans die each day from overdosing on prescription painkillers, according to
the CDC. In 2013, an estimated 1.9 million people abused or were dependent on prescription opiates.
.........................................................................................................................................
Where is the CDC on the 88,000 a year who die due to alcohol??? 1 in 10 between the ages of 22 and 64 are killed.......
So yesterday was another wonderful day.... I still have hope and believe in Bernie but it seems money trumps people and those who are comfortable with the status quo trumps compassion for those who have no way to help themselves.
Many here have told me here it's not all about me so I send a hearty congratulations to all those enjoying this "victory" life is good.

(11,076 posts)I am so sorry to hear about your struggle. To the people who say it's not all about you, I say they should try to live with your pain and see how that works out. My guess is that they wouldn't last an hour. I hope you find some relief soon. Sending you love and healing energy. Don't let the haters get you down.

(30,481 posts)I'm not sure as to your alcohol connection. I wasn't aware people think the CDC speaks in support of alcohol abuse.

(7,661 posts)Also do I have to google domestic violence perpetrated on women and children do to alcohol abuse...... give me a break. Go have a drink and enjoy the victory it's therapeutical I believe....
Drinking too much can harm your health. Excessive alcohol use led to approximately 88,000 deaths and 2.5 million years of potential life lost (YPLL) each year in the United States from 2006 2010, shortening the lives of those who died by an average of 30 years.1,2 Further, excessive drinking was responsible for 1 in 10 deaths among working-age adults aged 20-64 years. The economic costs of excessive alcohol consumption in 2010 were estimated at $249 billion, or $2.05 a drink.3

(30,481 posts)Chronic pain is a nightmare. Have dealt with it myself. I took a non-opiate route and because of that the treatment consumed enormous amounts of time. It's truly a struggle. I wish we all had the appropriate health care. We are working toward that goal against enormous opposition. I will continue to fight for healthcare as a right.
Your link to the CDC really has nothing to do with it. Nor does alcohol except for those suffering from pain due to alcohol abuse. Once again, not promoted by the CDC.
We are in this fight together.

(54,770 posts)chronic pain.
Read this in an AMA publication -- [under CDC recommendations] physicians would prescribe pain medications only after considering non-addictive pain relievers, behavioral changes and other options. Additionally, the CDC...wants physicians to prescribe the lowest effective dose possible. Meanwhile, for short-term pain, the CDC recommends limiting opioids to three days of treatment, when possible.
That means, that if a physician thinks opiods are the best treatment, you will very likely get it. With a shunt and your other conditions, I think most docs would write a prescription without hesitation.
Rush Limbaugh will have a tougher time.
Good luck.

(7,661 posts)pressured to get off the meds because of my neurosurgeon's belief that my ongoing headaches after shunt surgery was due to the low dose I was taking. Of course that was not the case and now on top of the headaches my neuropathic pain is running amok. I tried a few weeks ago to get medical marijuana and was told I could not because of NYS laws, even though I do have one of the inflictions listed.
I was treated like a doctor shopping drug seeker once again by the satellite office of my former pain management. I could not go to my old pain management office because no one is certified there. I had a feeling things were going towards a "purge" of chronic pain patients and I think I am right. I do not believe my chances are good to being able to get any relief or return to taking pain medication. IMO it is not fair t make someone suffer because of other people's actions.

(11,546 posts)I had three back surgeries in 3.5 years and I am worse off than I was before. If they reduce or take the meds away from me, I will be in bed for most of the day. Some life that will be!!

I'm so sorry - it is about you and them and especially the weakest amongst us. I understand the pain that you endure although yours seems much more intense and from numerous sources. But I know that the pain can be all encompassing at times.
my heart does out to you. I pray (yes, I do - sorry) that we have single payer some time soon in order to help people like you who can;t get help from the f-ing insurance companies. After dealing with them for 10+ years, I curse anyone who thinks that this system is just fine.
Btw - not really curse. That sounds terrible. I just disagree with them vehemently!

(7,661 posts)reply. I also had three surgeries two on my lower back (much worse after) and I had my neck fused which really did not get much better but I'm happy it did not get worse.
The Hydrocephalus after my neck collapse was the blow in which has caused the most harm. After getting shunted I was told that the reason for my continuing headaches was because of the 15mg Oxycodone I was taking. I stopped taking the medication last year and of course my headaches have continued to this day.
So now I just try to stay immobile and still my neuropathic pain rages on. I kept quiet for years and kept a stiff upper lip but now I don't care what people say about my whining.
I hope your own pain is being treated with compassion and you are being treated with respect and dignity. IMO the respect part goes a long way in the way we as chronic pain feel both mentally and physically.

(11,546 posts)I have a great doctor who is trying to get me into a functional restoration program but we'll see. I am actually lucky because I paid into a long term disability plan at work prior to my injury. But yeah, the mental and physical part together is wearing me out. I know that you understand.
I am on 15mg of oxy three times a day and sometimes get headaches but not often. The neuro pain is still there even with a spinal cord stimulator, although it has helped. The hydrocephalus though - wow - I am so - MORE than sorry about that! Back injuries can lead to so many more issues.
I hope that sooner rather than later that you get into that trial. it's so awful that THIS is how some have to go about getting care that they need!! It should not be like that in the U.S. It's enough to make some give up because they figure "what's the use?" I hope that never happens to you.
HRC and her supporters don't give a shit.
Incremental change baby, that's the ticket. Just gotta wait another generation
