Undecideds/Independents. Heard on NPR Diane Rehm show. ARGGGGH!

Why do I listen? They had on a woman who wrote a book on undecided/independent voters. she says "I get so upset with the misconceptions that they are lazy or uninformed or apathetic". Then one calls in and complains that she hasn't heard anything about jobs from either candidate - that it will be an election to pick the lesser of two evils.

If these people are so well informed, wouldn't you think they would realize that Republicans have had one goal for four years - block everything and anything that Democrats try to do to fix things.

Why is this particular fact off limits? Why doesn't it come up in the media? Is it because Obama is damned if he raises it (well, isn't it a job of the president to make people work together, etc) and damned if he doesn't (makes it seem like he's done nothing)......like so many other issues Obama is faced with (ie the angry black man if he fights back, wimp if he doesn't)...

it doesn't matter. It's all about ground game for Obama and I will bet money that he has already won OH and NV, meaning the race is over. The media plays up undecideds, but they do not mnatter in this election. This is another area where we and the O campaign are not on the same page - he is several steps ahead but for some reason we still believe the 'old paradigm' of undecideds and polls are everything. They aren't.

Ohio.
Nevada.

That's what matters.

I was really hoping Obama would at least mention the obstructionist Congress last night, especially after Mitt's "Democrat supermajority" bullshit.

I realize he's not running against the GOP congressional delegation, but when Romney talks about what Obama didn't get done it's VITAL to point out that he had literally hundeds of Republicans blocking him at every turn.

Republicans made defeting Obama their "number one priority." THEY own the dismal job stuation, not Obama. It's 100% fair to point that out and I sure hope Obama starts doing it with more force.

After listening to numerous discussions on TV and radio with "undecideds" I've concluded that they are not very bright people. One would have to be almost brain-dead to be undecided in this polarized political atmosphere.

No one cares what they think for this reason. They aren't good at sorting information and probably lack a critical frame, meaning and education in critical thinking.

This kind of person will drive you nuts in a restaurant. They'll take a half hour to decide what to eat!

Obama and team care about registering voters and GOTV. The undecideds at this point is MSM schtick

My sister is one of the "undecided". She is married to a right-winger who is always knocking down the fact checks I send her. One day she's one way, another day, well, it's a crapshoot. She's exasperating!

And yes, the restaurant thing definitely applies to her,as do other decisions she tries to make.

WTF is wrong with her?

They media is who created the 'undecideds'.

All you have to do is listen to them to realize they've been living in a cave somewhere on another planet for all they know. It's hard work to be that ignorant of things. It's the way the media stays relevant at this stage of the campaigns.

How can you possibly be undecided. I can't decide if these people really don't understand, can't make up their mind or just like acting like they are weighing the information more heavily than the rest of us. Comes off as either dumb or elitist.

This morning on his ESPN radio show, Tony Kornheiser discussed the debate with Howard Fineman and said he does not believe there are any undecideds left. He says they are uncommitted not undecided. Then he added-- all 9 of them and they should be deported immediately. LOL

Virtually every undecided voter I have ever sseen interviewed this season strikes me as scarily dimwitted. All of them say "I just need more information." What???

16. The conflict of cultural appeal vs. the right choice: two kinds of undecided folks

If you happen to be unfortunate enough to live in a "battleground" state, there is too much noise on the airwaves that it's hard to filter the static from the actual facts, unless you go out and actually read up on the various claims.

Also, most people just don't understand what private equity is. They have heard how much money there is to be made in it, and so they hold someone who does it in an initially high regard, like people used to think about someone who had a doctorate degree. Now if you have a doctorate, people will give you the skance look, like "Oh, there's one of those out of touch ivory tower types." If you drive a Bentley, regardless of what you did to get it, most people will have the first thought, "I want to be buddies with that guy!" Don't fool yourself that money doesn't have sex appeal to the average American.

But somewhere in deep in their subconsciousness, there is still a misgiving, like: would I really trust that guy to babysit my kids? But they just don't have time to dig down and do their own due diligence. The ones who are gullible (call them Type I) just tune in to their network of choice and accept what they hear after it gets repeated enough times - the imprint starts to form gradually until finally it's election day and wham-o, they "decide". Thankfully, we didn't see much of that at the town hall debate audience, which actually surprised me.

The other folks (call them Type II) don't trust what they hear in the media, so nothing is going to make up their minds until they do their own due diligence, which they don't have time and/or the motivation to do. They are likely to find something more important to do every time the choice is presented to them, including when it's time to show up at the polls on election day. They make up the "I forgot to leave work early", or "the line was too long" crowd. He / she is putting off making his/her mind up, hoping that something will emerge that makes the due diligence unnecessary - an unguarded Howard Dean moment - a Eliot Spitzer / John Edwards type scandal - something that will be irrefutable fact and FORCE their hand.

Now if you had to take the undecideds, and split them along lines of education, intelligence and work ethic, and then look at how that division breaks down between Type I and Type II. That will put into perspective why Obama really has to get to the type II's and actively make his case to them personally, directly, and with lots of facts... while Romney can just sit back and let conservative talk radio sing his hollow praises every day during the morning commute, and eventually the imprint become indelible for the Type I's.
