New Monmouth poll shows Hillary up 14 points in Ohio

New Monmouth poll shows Clinton up 14 points in Ohio — both campaigns would be pretty surprised if the margin were that big @ this point.

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton leads in the Democratic contest for Ohio by 14 percentage points, according to a Monmouth poll released Monday.

The poll showed support for Clinton at 54 percent, while Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) was at 40 percent. This is the first Monmouth poll fielded in Ohio.

Recent polling of the Democratic race in Ohio has produced wildly different results among various pollsters. In the last two weeks, some polls have shown Sanders bearing down on Clinton and narrowing her lead (which has been huge for most of the fall and winter) to within single digits. Other polls, however, show Clinton continuing to hold as much as a 30-point lead over Sanders. Ohio was given extra urgency by the recent upset result in neighboring Michigan, where Sanders won despite polls predicting a crushing Clinton victory.

TPM’s PollTracker Average shows Clinton leading at 52.1 percent in Ohio, to Sanders’ 43.5 percent.

The Monmouth poll was carried out from March 11-13 by live telephone interview. It surveyed 302 people likely to vote in the Democratic primary, with a margin of error of 5.6 percent.

Monmouth University Poll:

In Ohio’s Democratic primary, Hillary Clinton currently holds a 54% to 40% lead over Bernie Sanders. Clinton enjoys a solid edge among non-white voters (66% to 24%), who make up 1/4th of the likely electorate. Clinton also has a small 51% to 45% lead among non-Hispanic whites. Clinton leads among both women (56% to 37%) and men (53% to 44%) in Ohio. Sanders leads among voters under the age of 50 (58% to 36% for Clinton), but Clinton has a solid 73% to 22% advantage among voters age 50 and older.

One-in-ten voters (12%) say they have already cast their ballots in the Democratic primary and another 43% say they have completely decided on their candidate choice. Another 22% have a strong preference but are willing to consider the other candidate, 12% have just a slight preference, and 11% are really undecided at this point. Similar levels of Clinton voters (60%) and Sanders supporters (54%) say they have already voted or that their choice is locked.

Independents can choose which party to vote for at the polls. Independents overwhelmingly support Bernie.

But if you would like to bet that h.c. wins by this margin or larger, I'm all in.
