2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumClimate Change Is the Greatest Threat Facing Humanity and It's Much Worse Than Previously Predicted
I've worked in the field for over thirty years and the current temperature rises are at the extreme high end of the prediction models. We CANNOT ignore the problem - we must take drastic action NOW if we give a damn about our children and future generations!
Bernie Sanders is the ONLY candidate we can trust to do the right thing with this life threatening, civilization threatening disaster.

(3,111 posts)As Bernie says, "If we all stand together, there is nothing we cannot do."
Hard to find leaders of this caliber however.
Best wishes in keeping the faith in spite of the various obstacles of humanity!

(57,936 posts)We need to require companies that sell water to insure that it is safe.
Her in Los Angeles, our municipal water company has a huge job.
Los Angeles Water and Power (and I have no tie to it) protected us from the Enron scam, and for that we are very grateful.
Love my municipal water company. But they need to do even more to make sure our water is safe. Somehow, I just don't trust private investors to invest the money necessary or to report honestly about the quality of the water I drink. I want checks and balances in government, and I want the government in charge of my water.
Am I crazy to feel this way?

I've also long thought and argued that the only silver lining that is likely to come from it is the end of modern rightwingnuttery as we know it, given that it is gonna require/demand "socialistic" solutions their ideology as it is currently practiced cannot provide.

(61,703 posts)Very little of his plan can be enacted by the president alone. Congress has the power over most of that, so the president must convince Congress. Same with his plan to overturn Citizens United. I agree that it is essential (as does Hillary), but it's up to the Supreme Court.
For me, it still comes down to who can convince Congress to act. Hillary is more likely to do so, imo.
I will support whichever gets the Democratic nomination.

(38,613 posts)the "HRC can convince Congress but Sanders cannot" meme is often-repeated but no context outside of reference to some of her endorsements. The Clintons are the most controversial figures in government for most Republicans, likely ranking as the most hated public figures in modern history on the Republican side. Given that, how is she more likely than he is to pass through legislation successfully?
To Sanders credit, he is the longest serving Independent in the history of Congress and has had more successfully passed amendments than any other member of congress in history. All of them true to his liberal progressive ideals. Many voted on with the support of Republicans and Democrats. Despite the meme to the contrary, he has had an exceptionally successful career in Congress.

(898 posts)I respectfully disagree with you concerning Hillary. However, it is absolutely essential that unprecedented action be taken immediately to address the climate catastrophe the is at our doorstep. The future of our children is at stake, and the habitability of the planet for future generations. I sometimes wish I didn't know as much as I do about climate change - it is very depressing. As a parent I have put all other issues aside in my decision to support the one candidate that might be able to rally the people to address this looming global catastrophe. The acceleration of temperature rise strongly appears to be exceeding the predictions of all reputable climate change models.
I wish you the best and hope that you continue to follow this issue.

(61,703 posts)It's why it's essential to elect a Democrat and eventually get Democratic takeover of Congress.
I happen to think that Hillary Clinton is more likely to get this accomplished, but if Bernie is the nominee I will wholeheartedly support him. The Supreme Court alone is reason to ensure Democratic victory for the White House.
We must retake Congress.

(8,733 posts)Like "if his personal plan doesn't solve the worldwide issue than he sucks" kind of 'tone'.
Always find it fascinating how so many are so eager to trash his efforts in the most condescending manner they can muster.
Talk about this man like he is a mentally challenged and/or delusional.
The man has 25+ years as a dedicated progressive and Democratic Party ally, co-founded the Congressional Progressive Caucus and the longest serving Independent in the history of Congress.

REASON FOR ALERT
This post is disruptive, hurtful, rude, insensitive, over-the-top, or otherwise inappropriate.
ALERTER'S COMMENTS
This is ridiculous. The poster asked for information and is blasted in return. Over the top, personal attack, all for simply asking a question.
You served on a randomly-selected Jury of DU members which reviewed this post. The review was completed at Mon Mar 14, 2016, 07:27 PM, and the Jury voted 2-5 to LEAVE IT.
Juror #1 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: Agree with alerter. No need to attack people for supporting a different Democratic candidate.
Juror #2 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: This chair is rude as well as angry. But I don't think this rises to the level of a hide.
Juror #3 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: "Over the top, personal attack, all for simply asking a question." LOL!! No, the comment was actually polite, factual and well poised. This looks more like "alert stalking" of a Bernie supporter. Leave it alone.
Juror #4 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: - again
Juror #5 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: Over the top response.
Juror #6 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: This was a waste of everyone's time.
Juror #7 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: I really have no idea why this was alerted on. In GDP as a response across candidate lines, this post almost seems like a hug.
Thank you very much for participating in our Jury system, and we hope you will be able to participate again in the future.

Right now the planet is set to run out of all resources by 2050, and it will be game over before then as we fight one another for the scraps....unless we elect Bernie, of course.
