2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumCamp Hillary needs to admit she stuck her foot in her mouth over the "Where was Bernie" gaffe.
Question: Where was Bernie during the 1993 health care debate?
Answer: Standing right behind her!
But now I see they've issued statements implying Bernie didn't do enough? That he was a follower, not a leader??!
WTF?
Can they NEVER admit she, or they, made a mistake??? I'm so sick of this attitude that they have to win the point, they can't just let one go, no matter what.

(3,017 posts)Bernie was an elected official. Hillary was appointed by her husband the President to do something she was unqualified to do (she admitted she was not expert on healthcare at the time).
So if they want to brag now that Hillary led, do they want to take responsibility that she led the secretive effort so incompetently that healthcare reform went nowhere AND that bungled effort helped create the Republican landslide of 1994 that gave us Republican control of both houses of Congress for the first time in 40 years, Speaker Gingrich and the "Contract with America"? Do they want to take credit for that?

It was a disaster that cost the taxpayers $30 million, was put together in secret, went nowhere, and helped lead to the Republican takeover of the House and Senate for the first time in 40 years in the November, 1994 election.
It was a demonstration of complete incompetence by Hillary. If I was running her campaign, it would be the last thing I'd want to talk about.
What is the message her campaign is trying to push? "I'm against a single payer healthcare plan now, but 23 years ago I was for it until I found out I couldn't get it and gave up."

(1,539 posts)A major issue was that Hillary was not elected to do anything. She headed up healthcare reform for the Clinton administration but, she had no official title or public office position. As First Lady. she was accountable to no one. And she held closed door meetings which caused the public to lose confidence in reform.

(3,666 posts)Sanders was pumping for single payer, when the Hillary was leading the way for a more realistic alternative. Sanders voted against the actual money that actually bailed out the auto-industry.
Both times it was symptom of the same enduring Sanders disease.
"His legislative record was to state the ideological position he took on the left, but with the exception of a few small things, he never got anything done," said Frank, who has endorsed Clinton. Senators are not impotent."

What kind of experience does Bernie Sanders have? Let's take a look.
By Zaid Jilani / AlterNet
October 17, 2015
Once Sanders made it to the Senate in 2006, his ability to use amendments to advance a progressive agenda was empowered. Here are some of the amendments he passed in the Senate:
Greening the U.S. Government (June 2007): A Sanders amendment made a change to the law so at least 30 percent of the hot water demand in newer federal buildings is provided through solar water heaters.
Protecting Our Troops (October 2007): Sanders used an amendment to win $10 million for operation and maintenance of the Army National Guard, which had been stretched thin and overextended by the war in Iraq.
Restricting the Bailout to Protect U.S. Workers (Feburary 2009): A Sanders amendment required the banking bailout to utilize stricter H-1B hiring standards to ensure bailout funds weren't used to displace American workers.
Helping Veterans' Kids (July 2009): A Sanders amendment required the Comptroller General to put together comprehensive reporting on financial assistance for child care available to parents in the Armed Forces.
Exposing Corruption in the Military-Industrial Complex (November 2012): A Sanders amendment required public availability of the database of senior Department officials seeking employment with defense contractors an important step toward transparency that revealed the corruption of the revolving door in action.
...
Using the Power of a Senator
While Sanders was an amendment king who was able to bring bipartisan coalitions together to make serious changes to laws, he also knew how to be a thorn in the side of the establishment until it offered up something in return. Sanders was able to get the first-ever audit of funds given out by the Federal Reserve, which made transparent over $2 trillion of funds handed out by the secretive organization. This was a cause that Republican congressman Ron Paul (TX) had been pursuing for decades, but Sanders was able to get the votes to do it by forging a compromise that required an audit for the bailout period alone.
When the Affordable Care Act was in danger of not having the votes to pass, Sanders used his leverage to win enough funding for free health treatment for 10 million Americans through Community Health Centers. This gutsy moveholding out until the funds were put into the billhas even Republican members of Congress requesting the funds, which have helped millions of Americans who otherwise would not have access.
Another moment came when Sanders, who was then chair of the Veterans committee, worked with Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), to overhaul the Veterans Administration. McCain praised Sanders' work on the bill in an interview with National Journal. Sen. Jack Reed (D-RI) even went so far as to say the bill would never have passed without Sanders' ability to bring the parties to a deal.

And he did it all without taking millions from special interests.
What did Hillary do again, I mean besides help get us into the Iraq war?
ljm2002
(10,751 posts)Except that at the time he voted against the bank bailout, no one was planning to use the funds for the auto bailout. Ergo, his vote had NOTHING to do with the auto bailout AT THE TIME HE MADE IT. And of course, he DID vote for the actual "auto bailout bill" -- which died a quick death in the Senate, largely because Republicans wanted to engage in a little more union-busting (UAW).
This is the canonical example of an artful smear. While it is true in a very narrow, technical sense, it is carefully worded to tread that line, avoiding being outright false yet giving a very false impression. Parse it all you want, most of us see this sort of thing as LYING.
kennetha
(3,666 posts)Everybody KNEW some of the second round of TARP funds would be used for the auto bailout. Bush announced his intention to do so. President elect Obama urged democrats to vote for it. Sanders refused. He was too pure to get his hands dirty. He's a useless, impotent, ideologue, who merely preaches and never gets anything done.
That's been his modus operandi the entire time he's been in the Congress. That's why NONE of his colleagues have any desire to see him be president.
He's a self-indulgent purist, a legend in his own mind.
This quote perfectly sums him up:
"His legislative record was to state the ideological position he took on the left, but with the exception of a few small things, he never got anything done," said Frank, who has endorsed Clinton. Senators are not impotent."
