Why are Bernie supporters lying about his ghetto remark?

In other threads, Bernie supporters claim his ghetto remarks were just him quoting a BLM member, and to prove it they post an edited version of his remarks. The reason this matters is that they hold Hillary to fire for her misstatements, but actually lie to defend Bernie. Both Hillary and Bernie occasionally screw up. Hillary apologized for her comments about Nancy Reagan and, while Bernie didn't apologize, he at least clarified his remarks on ghettos. Let's give them both the benefit of the doubt. At the very least, let's not lie.

This is what Bernie said at the debate:

Tell you another story, I was with young people active in the Black Lives Matter movement. A young lady comes up to me and she says, you don’t understand what police do in certain black communities. You don’t understand the degree to which we are terrorized, and I’m not just talking about the horrible shootings that we have seen, which have got to end and we’ve got to hold police officers accountable, I’m just talking about every day activities where police officers are bullying people.

So to answer your question, I would say, and I think it’s similar to what the secretary said, when you’re white, you don’t know what it’s like to be living in a ghetto. You don’t know what it’s like to be poor. You don’t know what it’s like to be hassled when you walk down the street or you get dragged out of a car.

When Bernie supporters tell the story, they remove the bold and turn it into this:

Tell you another story, I was with young people active in the Black Lives Matter movement. A young lady comes up to me and she says, "You don’t understand what police do in certain black communities. You don’t understand the degree to which we are terrorized, and I’m not just talking about the horrible shootings that we have seen, which have got to end and we’ve got to hold police officers accountable, I’m just talking about every day activities where police officers are bullying people. You don’t know what it’s like to be living in a ghetto. You don’t know what it’s like to be poor. You don’t know what it’s like to be hassled when you walk down the street or you get dragged out of a car."

If you're going to accuse Bernie Supporters of lying, you're going to have to back that up with something more than just your say-so.

Then we can talk about accuracy.

I provided two links. I can certainly provide more, but honestly I'm not seeking to embarrass individuals. If you go to the DU thread I linked to, you'll find several examples.

Not really sources at all. Snopes comments on the validity of sourced materials. DU does the same.

I do get your point about people going to extremes to justify and ameliorate every gaffe their candidate makes. It's always better to just fess up and move on. Grudges are never a good thing.

give Hlllary Clinton the benefit of the doubt on her comments about Reagan. You didn't give Sanders the benefit of the doubt for the ghetto remark. Hillary supports have constantly painted Bernie Sanders and his supporters as racist and sexist.

Many black people were offended by Sanders' remarks...Some of the support Clinton (I don't) and some support Sanders.

Many gay people were offended by Clinton's remarks...Some of them support Clinton and some support Sanders.

The offensive nature of the remarks has nothing to do with whom you support but, at this time, it has everything to do with how the argument is framed.

Just because Hillary said some fucked up shit doesn't me that I should vote for Bernie...and vice versa.

older white folks and how they should relinquish their power, then it became more of a racial divide ... Bernie in not black enough etc.

In summary this kind of talk is all very disgusting and should be called out at every turn.

We are all people, with our own set of challenges, and yes some groups have suffered far more than others. Constantly drawing distinctions by age, racial, gender or religion is not helpful. That is not to say we cannot address and should not address specific injustices that are targeted against certain groups, we should, but need to do so in a way that is not pitting one group against another.

I certainly am giving them both the benefit of the doubt. I said they both occasionally screw up, and that we should give them the benefit of the doubt. My issue is with the yuuuuuge number of threads about Hillary's stupid comment about Nancy Reagan and AIDS, while at the same time using lies (editing Bernie's comments) to defend his ghetto statement. Hillary apologized. The Clintons and the Clinton foundation are very good on the issue of AIDS. Bernie clarified his remark. Let's move on. But, let's not lie to defend Bernie.

It's rude to ask questions, ignore the answers and then ask the questions again as if they'd not been answered. Maybe you forgot, like Hillary forgot the Reagans were villains and not champions of HIV/ AIDS?
