I think the reason is has not been played up is that it could be used against him. Here is the counter argument : not enough jobs were added to swing the number down to 7.8%. A portion of that drop must be from people who were formerly seeking work who decided to give up.

Edit : found the numbers. 114000 jobs added. The number to break even with polulation growth for unemployment is generally sited in the 100000 to 130000 range. When factoring that in, one can make a decent argument that the unemployment drop had little to do with people finding jobs or economic improvement.
