2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumSomething has stuck in my mind about the last debate...
Remember the (cool and collected) comment Obama made about benefits to companies for out-sourcing? Romney got all flustered and did that nervous laugh while he wiggled his body like jelly. He does that when he's trying to squirm out of a situation. Mitt said something about if that was true, his accountants hadn't told him...maybe he'd better get another accountant.
Was that a hint to Romney that Obama KNEW what was in his tax returns?
If Obama has figured out or knows what Mitt pulled, he should throw him another zinger to knock him off center so he worries that Obama might bring up other tax dodges he used. A "does he know or doesn't he" type of situation.
I don't know how to go back and get excerpts from the debate, but I think I'm right in saying that was a very stressful moment for Mitt.

(8,694 posts)Obama: When it comes to corporate taxes, Governor Romney has said he wants to, in a revenue-neutral way, close loopholes, deductions he hasn't identified which ones they are but thereby bring down the corporate rate. Well, I want to do the same thing, but I've actually identified how we can do that.
And part of the way to do it is to not give tax breaks to companies that are shipping jobs overseas. Right now you can actually take a deduction for moving a plant overseas. I think most Americans would say that doesn't make sense. And all that raises revenue................
Romney:
Jim, let's we we've gone on a lot of topics there, and so I've got to take it's going to take a minute to go from Medicaid to schools to

Thanks to you, here is the rest of the conversation on that subject:
The second topic, which is you said you get a deduction for getting a plant overseas. Look, I've been in business for 25 years. I have no idea what you're talking about. I maybe need to get a new accountant.

MR. ROMNEY: But the the idea that you get a break for shipping jobs overseas is simply not the case.

(20,783 posts)Obama, of course, has got to be certain of the answer beforehand.
Some of this might not be appropriate for a town-hall format. One thing I think he might bring up in the third debate is "Mitt, how did you get $100 million in your IRA?" Even if the method was perfectly legal it looks hinky and most undecided voters are unlikely to know this already.

(25,551 posts)Rick Perry was being rude, but this shows you can call him out. As we've all seen on the campaign trail, Romney can be pretty cagey.
Obama needs more "You" or as Joe Biden put it, "my friend over here" when attacking Romney.
It needs to be more personally directed at Romney. Policy wise, Romney has already stated that he will close tax loopholes/shelters for the rich, even though he has done it himself.
Romney is a case of "Condemns for others what he does for himself".
We've seen it over and over.
Therefore, Obama needs to point out that Romney has done it. It needs to be personal.
(I hope I make sense)

Mitt cannot BEAR being put on the back foot and not being allowed to fully expain or cover for himself if he's feeling cornered or guilty. He'll just keep hacking away at it ever more desperately.
I'd be surprised if the Obama camp haven't noticed this. Whether the opportunity will arise to capitalize on it in either debate is another matter.
