MSNBC Interrupts Hillary Clinton's Speech To Complain About Her VoiceMSNBC's Lawrence O'Donnell : "One of the trickier things to teach people about public speaking is that the microphone works, you don't have to actually yell,".
"When you're going up every octave with every word, people are like, I have to get some popcorn and get away from this," former RNC chair Michael Steele said. "You'd think after all the years, she would figure that out."
The former secretary of state's speaking voice has long been a topic of conversation. Various pundits... have referred to her voice as "unpleasant," "unrelaxed" and "bitter."

(7,300 posts)Is not rude to say to a person that has interrupted. Domething like, "Shut the fuck up. I have the floor, not you." would be a rude way to correct the rude interruption.

(50,302 posts)The truth is, when it comes to campaigning, Hillary's voice is a problem. She desperately needs a voice coach. By the time she finishes a thought she's practically screaming.

(9,385 posts)It's very annoying and it comes off aggressive. I won't listen to it, and it isn't about being a woman because I'm one too. I will not be shouted at by anybody, including on tv.
Vocal fry is out too, it's extremely phony. Learn to speak. The new thing I don't like is when people pronounce Clinton as if it doesn't have a "t" in it... like Clin-in. Just stop it, it's stupid.

(11,546 posts)Even when he gets a bit angry, he can hold it together by talking lower. I was actually taught in a speech class that if pople start getting excited and raising their voices to make their points, lower your voice and remain as calm as you can. If you do, they will start lowering theirs as well. I have tried it several times and it works! I'm sure that they all have taken speech classes but maybe Obama actually remembered his.

(3,937 posts)Talked about how classy Obama is and that even when he diss'ing you or even if Obama told a Your Momma joke it would still sound equally classy because of his delivery. Then Noah told one as Obama with the little pauses and the "uuh.." that we have come to know and love. It was funny because it was so true.
Even when Obama speaks loudly as he does here, he still lacks a certain tone. He never comes across as out of control:

(9,894 posts)and I find her voice annoying. As I do Sander's. Both definitely could use some serious voice coaching.
Actually, everything about this campaign is freakin' annoying. From the obvious pandering and shouting on our side to the food fight, pee-pee comparison debates on the other.

(10,559 posts)is that it completely attempts to reframe the issue into something that isn't actually the problem.
The post is about a perception of untrained or unpleasant vocal intonation, with issues that are regularly discussed in high school speech classes and other training (including Toast Masters). Supporters of the other candidate chimed in the thread with "yeah, my guy does it, too" and yet --
You immediately decided it was a sexist thing, which allows you to ignore whether or not there is an actual legitimate issue.
You dismissed the concern and mentally reinforced the stereotype that anyone who has an issue with your candidate is simply being sexist and therefore should not be listened to.
This willingness to ignore anyone else's reality but your own gives you the appearance of not being credible in any attempt at an impartial discussion.
Please do not think your dog whistle is being missed; it appears to be a defense mechanism, and if you are stifling dissent about something so innocent as vocal tone, what the heck can be expected when real problems with real world consequences need to be debated? Are the dictators of the world going to be swayed by the fact her supporters think anyone who doesn't agree with her is sexist?
It makes her seem weak, and her supporters foolishly partisan.
My opinion. Your mileage may vary.

IMO, both are way to shallow in the 'debates'.

(1,235 posts)but on the issues .... I could not care less about her voice and "yelling".
Lots of people have annoying voices, and poor speaking technique.
A female voice is suppose to be (by nature) more 'noticeable' and 'attention grabbing' .. supposedly that's for good evolutionary reasons ... that's why female voices are usually used for GPS devices, emergency aircraft warning systems, etc.
I find her voice annoying myself, but when ever I find myself noticing this I consciously try to relax and ignore the voice and listen to the words (which usually makes me more annoyed in the case of Hillary and her establishment sell out BS.)

(37,428 posts)I did think she sounded great on Super Tuesday, a little hoarseness indicative of exhaustion suiting her. That spoke to me of earned victories.
I knowingly began a post with, " I don't want to be sexist, but..." it's something I want to be on guard against; generally, I avoid listening to speeches and debates.
Mike Nelson
(9,966 posts)...single out Hillary. They both yell. Hillary and Bernie both spoke too loudly, for practically the entire debate last night. I get what Mr. O'Donnell is saying about working with a mic. He doesn't take into account the speaker's way to increase the crowd excitement is to speak louder. Also, if you speak softly using a mic, you can get the audience to be very quiet. I find that increases the audience's attention to what you are saying... but, possibly, these candidates are interested in upping the crowd noise and involvement.
I'm surprised to read people don't like Hillary's voice - perhaps it's that they don't like her and will find any voice annoying. Both Hillary and Bernie have fantastic, distinctive voices; you can hear them on the radio without need for identification. I find neither to be annoying - although I don't like it when either of them shouts for a long period of time. They're both more raspy than usual now, too, I think.
IdaBriggs
(10,559 posts)and according to the folks in my house who have bat level auditory skills, I also speak louder when I get excited. I don't notice, but they wince. I recently had my hearing checked - maybe the candidates need to do so, also? Especially with all of the exposure to rallies, and the volumes of the crowds, etc.?

(9,966 posts)...they travel in comfort, I know... but the campaign must be exhausting. They have amazing energy!
