2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumDid you ever notice that here we have a 74 year old man with the qualities of youth 40 years younger
a true leader with a wondrous quality of imagination, a predominance of courage over timidity, and a real appetite for adventure -- and he is channeling that passion into an urgent need for change in our nation -- a "revolution" if you will.
He inspires the dreams of our impassioned youth as well as people of all ages and he is an indefatigable champion of human rights, working tirelessly every day to produce the innovative, collaborative solutions we all seek.
It seems that most people get more conservative -- more "careful" as they age, not willing to take on the huge and difficult goals that are often needed to affect real change in a society. Sure, it's easier to maintain the status quo... being careful -- careful to offer only "incremental changes." NOT BERNIE (thank God). He is a tiger. OUR TIGER!!!!

It's pretty simple but we don't get it unless we try .

(19,483 posts)He reminds me of a lot of grumpy, lecturing, hectoring, short-tempered old people I encountered when I was growing up. I'm 72; I couldn't stand them then, and I can't stand them now.

(3,335 posts)For someone who's 74, he looks at least 10 years older to me and all that anger he exhibits during the debates can't be good for his health at 74. I find all the repeated hand raising and waving to be annoying as hell, in a two person debate. The people conducting the debate see him. His behavior is starting to resemble that of Donald Trump, someone else who seems to exhibit the patience and self-control of a 3 year old.

(15,435 posts)grand daughter and my 48 year daughter and I recently had a small "stretching" contest. I don't want what I'm going to say to be considered bragging, just trying to make a point.
Ever since I was very young I played sports and was probably what you would call a Tom Boy. Back then there were few sports offered to girls in school so most sports I engaged in like kick ball, baseball, swimming or track was done after school. And yeah I DID get into some fist fights with a bunch of boys and won!
When I got to high school the ONLY competitive sport that was offered to girls was tennis, and I did a LOT of winning. I did sooooooo much winning you wouldn't believe it, sooooo much winning! THAT was my small imitation of T-Rump in case you didn't catch it. Sooooo much winning, LOL!
I also spent hours and hours at the local swimming pool that I began to take up low & high board diving and loved it. We were required to take P.E back then and we had volley ball and tumbling too. I suppose given the times it was called being involved in sports, not much else. Competition for girls back then WASN'T a big deal.
As the years have gone by I continued to play tennis and jogged when jogging wasn't what you called it. It was was just running. I lived in TX so I rode horses a lot too. After moving to FL I found that bowling was pretty popular and sometimes I bowled on 2 teams a week and I played softball on the weekends. We would go to the Keys on vacation and scuba diving was just something you do. I always had a full time job and before Women's Lib., women did almost all of the house cleaning, cooking and the usual fun stuff! And I had two kids. Before moving to FL, TX seemed liked the last place to hear about Women's Lib and I didn't train my husband in "house husbandry!"
What I'm getting to is this. As I've gotten older I've found it necessary to stay active by exercising, watching my weight and riding bikes. My generation was the one who defined itself as LIBERAL and embraced WOMEN'S LIBERATION! It's just too bad that we have to fight these fights all over again!
Back to the competition with my daughter & grand daughter. What we were doing was seeing who could still touch their toes, sit down and touch their nose to their knees and things of that sort. But because of my years of staying active and even given that I have some scoliosis, degenerative disks and of course the usual elder problem ARTHRITIS we try to stay active or become a prune.
Sure, I'm not able to do things as fast as I once did, but I was the one who could still touch my hands to the floor without bending my knees and sit down and touch my nose to my knees without bending my knees. Neither one of them could do this. Score one for Grandma!
So, yes he's 74... BUT I'm willing to bet that there are many people here on DU that are in my age group who are as active as I am. We know that staying active is good for our health, we have to watch our cholesterol, blood pressure, watch our diets, deal with the aches and pains that come with age and try to keep our brains stimulated attempting to ward off dementia and the horrible disease of Alzheimer's.
We are considered "senior people," but we're still very active and maybe we should remember this too. With Age Comes Wisdom!
Sorry, this does sound like bragging, but I'm just standing up for MY GENERATION! BERNIE IS NOT OLD!

(15,435 posts)I always feel the need to defend Bernie because MSM and TPTB are going out of their way to IGNORE him. Not until these debates has he gotten much coverage.
Took the long way around to say, AGE doesn't always mean OLD!

(11,945 posts)Bernie is amazing. I think it's his heart, his love for the people of this country, and for truth itself, that makes him so inwardly ferocious, so willing to push himself this hard and not give up.
He is an heroic human being and we are fortunate.
Thanks for a beautiful OP.
