Sexism and Hillary for President

The anger that women feel--in a male-dominated world full of sexism, economic inequality, abuse and exploitation is at the bottom of a lot of Hillary support from women IMO. Hillary will take advantage of this righteous anger to get elected, but not be in a position to do much about it.
----------------
I hope that both Hillary and Sanders supporters will weigh in on this point.
----------------

Background: retrowire put up an interesting post yesterday about the anger behind the mood of the country on both right and left:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1251&pid=1419121
----------------
This was my reply to that:

There is one "anger" component that I think you are leaving out of this --and that is the
anger that is at the base of the single-issue support of Hillary as "a woman who understands how hard it is for women."

This anger cuts across economic class divisions. More well off women know how hard they have worked to get where they are and admire her. Less well off women (erroneously) believe that she works for women just because she is a woman. Both groups admire her "toughness" in a male-dominated world. They admire what she had to do to get where she is. But what she had to do was to sell her soul.

The anger that women feel--in a male-dominated world full of sexism, economic inequality, abuse and exploitation is at the bottom of a lot of Hillary support IMO.

So I get that completely. But I don't believe that Hillary represents "women's values" very well, nor is she in a good position politically to protect their interests. All the rest of what she represents really turns me off--but I find it sad and ironic that she is seen by many women to be the best candidate for women.

1. Well, I am a woman. And I am against war, fracking, the TPP, corporate rule, cluster bombs,

increased H-1B visas, crushing student loans, and other things that seem to bring a smile to Hillary's face.

The thought that I would be compliant and accept those things, which hurt EVERYBODY (but the rich) and support Hillary because she is a woman - disgusts me and fills me with anger. There is no "olive branch" that can brush that away. Even if the olive branch was sincere, and not just proffered cynically, for my vote.

She is no champion of women. Her policies are devastating to all.

I'd love to see a president who is a qualified, honest, ethical woman not married to a former president and isn't purchased & working for Moneyed Interests.

Maybe next time.

2. The whole sexism/misogeny whine thrown constantly by Hillary supporters has completely devalued

any discussion of the real sexism/misogeny in this country. Complain about Hillary's positions or statements- clearly you are sexist, it's misogynistic.

Mention you are yourself a woman, and they call you a traitor to your sex.

Further proof that you don't need to be a man to be a dick.

And surprise, was call sexist by many Hillary supporters. It's really sad how people on both sides have become unwilling to have civil discourse about this election.

"After all these years of watching Hillary Clinton’s star as it rises, falls, but always rises again, I would love to be a true believer.

I’m feeling ambivalent."

--Gail Sheehy is the author of “Hillary’s Choice” and, most recently, the memoir “Daring: My Passages.”
