I really really want everyone to know the story of this brave man..who gave his last for Barack Obama.
A little over four years ago I met a guy on a website very similar to this. His name was Brent Mack.
Like me, he was a strong Democrat working for the election of Barack Obama and he too, spent a lot of time emailing and posting comments on Democratic websites. I liked what he had to say, and apparently, he liked what I was posting. We quickly became good cyber friends, and Brent introduced me to several of his on-line buddies. Together we became a real band of brothers.
We did a lot of online chatting and exchanging of e-mails. We wrote letters to our local newspapers and gave them to each other to submit. We shared a lot of information and news items, both favorable and unfavorable, as we followed the ups and downs of our cause.
Oftentimes, when we had nothing better to do and a bit too much time on our hands, we would raid a conservative website posting a barrage of articles and comments favorable toward our candidate or attacking the posters and enjoying the responses!
One conservative wrote, Here those trouble makers are again! which, of course only encouraged us to post more!
Once, I took Mark Twain's famous, "War Prayer and updated it for the Iraq war. It's a very provocative piece asking readers to imagine how prayers for victory in war are heard by the Divine. It includes lines asking for such things helping to kill and destroy and make widows and orphans. It's not the kind of thing the hard-core, pro-war Christian conservatives appreciate! I posted it on FreeRepublic.
When they saw it, the Freepeers went crazy posting messages like, "The enemy has visited our camp!" and "Satan has paid us a visit tonight!" It was like dropping a nest of trackerjackers direct from Hunger Games right in the middle of them! The article was taken down, and I was banned for life from that site, something that I wore as a proud badge of distinction. up.
I didnt know much about the others, except that one of the guys was American living in Thailand, and Brent lived somewhere in Florida.
The night of the election, we spend hours making phone calls urging people to get out and vote. It was great!
I remember watching Chris Matthews as he announced that Barack Obama had won California, Oregon and Washington State and the nation had elected its first black President!
Huge celebrations broke out everywhere that night and the next day our group was ecstatic.
Then, during the conversation, my friend Brent said he had an announcement for us, and it was important. I watched in stunned disbelief as his message spelled out across my computer screen.
Brent told us that he was dying of cancer and did not have much longer to live. He told us how good it was to have friends like us and to have worked together for such a momentous cause.
I think we all hardly knew what to say. We told him how good it was to have known him and how much he meant to us. Some of us expressed the hope he would recover, but he said it was too late and he had only days to live. Then he signed off, and the rest of us were left wondering. I could hardly believe it.
Two days later I received an e-mail from his address. I opened it up. It was from Brent's brother. Brent had passed.
Some cynics may think Brent a fraud, and I have no way of knowing for sure but I do believe, having known him for the many weeks I did, that what he said was true.
Brent, if you're reading this from another realm, I want you to know I am thinking about you and we, Democrats intend to win this one this time, just the way we did the last.
And know too,.that I have done all I can to tell your story..and its up to others to tell it now.
Peace..
