US Contribution to Death of Honduran Activist Goes Unmentioned in US Coverage

Fair & Accuracy In Reporting

March 4. 2016
by Adam Johnson

Honduran environmental activist Berta Cáceres was shot and killed in her home in La Esperanza, Intibuca, Wednesday. While the killers’ ID remains unknown, activists, media observers and the Cáceres family pointed to the increasingly reactionary and violent Honduran government, which has frequently clashed with Cáceres over her high-profile activism against land dispossession and mining, and her defense of indigenous rights.

There was widespread outcry and grief over her death, and the story was covered by major media in the United States. But there was a glaring problem with the coverage: Almost none of it mentioned that the brutal regime that likely killed Cáceres came to power in a 2009 coup d’etat supported by the United States, under President Barack Obama and then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

As Greg Grandin at The Nation explains:

Cáceres was a vocal and brave indigenous leader, an opponent of the 2009 Honduran coup that Hillary Clinton, as secretary of State, made possible. In The Nation, Dana Frank and I covered that coup as it unfolded. Later, as Clinton’s emails were released, others, such as Robert Naiman, Mark Weisbrot and Alex Main, revealed the central role she played in undercutting Manuel Zelaya, the deposed president, and undercutting the opposition movement demanding his restoration. In so doing, Clinton allied with the worst sectors of Honduran society.

It's terrible how she helped orchestrate the coup that helped remove Zelaya. Hondurans will never forgive her for that.

It is impossible to support Hillary's policies if you are a human/civil rights advocate.
I don't give a shit what they tell you as an excuse..her role in many parts of
the world has been many things, an advocate for women and children is not
one of them..you have to cherry pick her record pretty damn hard to convince yourself
she has helped more than hurt.

Thank you for the link.

-How have the women of Iraq fared under Clintonian sanctions, non-stop bombing, and the Iraq war and its fallout (e.g., the use of depleted uranium weapons leading to birth defect spikes, the power vacuum created by regime change, the emergence of ISIS)?
-How have the women of Libya fared under regime change?
-How have the women of Yemen fared under constant bombardment by the Saudis with arms sold by the Clinton State Dept. after the royals cut a big check to the Clinton Foundation?
-How have the working class women all over the US, and the women of Mexico who work in maquiladoras, fared under NAFTA?
-How did women fare under Clintonian "welfare reform"?

And the list just goes on and on. White, first world, selective feminism at its best.

But of course those that wish to wear blinders and insist this woman is a feminist and a progressive won't believe a word of this, not matter how many times it is reported by honest journalist, no matter how many times documents prove it is true, no matter what. Some like this time of politics where a candidate thinks he or she can do one thing and then present another and expect the world to believe somehow they have had a change of heart. I for one am not fooled for one minute this woman is not good for this country or the rest of the world IMHO.

by main stream media. To be fair DU generally ignores our companeros to the South, except for Judy Lynn who has ceaselessly covered the news out of Honduras.
