Obama: "Mitt, you got away with a lot of stuff the other night because I was being too polite

But I owe it to the American people not to let that happen tonight. You don't just get to choose which record you run on. Here's what you've been saying about xxxxxxxx for the last year and a half, and I think the American people deserve a politician who will tell them the same thing at a private fundraiser, at a Republican primary debate, and in the contest for the general election."

What do you think of that strategy as a general framework?

With a repeat of, "now Mitt, I just can't let you get away with that - a few months ago you said..."

I'm thinking this is a fairly genial way to really hammer the point home that Mitt is a liar and to show that Obama is willing to fight for the job and for American people who are still struggling during this painful recovery.

Finish the job by showing that the only things he seems to really care about are his tax cuts, his increases in military spending, and, perhaps, the Republican assault on abortion. And sweeping aside all regulations so we can see if we can duplicate this mess all over again.

Thoughts?

He's got to come up with:

1) A statement that is forceful and sets his theme on this for the night and explains WHY he was like he was during the first debate (and matching "I was being too polite" with a position of real strength makes it a much more viable statement) and

2) Something he can use as a refrain, again and again, to tie things together each time he nails Romney for running away from his record, and pretending his record is something he can just make up as he goes along.

He can handle Mittwit. He's on to Romney's game now. I think he will be fine.

In other words, don't ever mention the last debate. Any "explanation" will only 1) remind watchers of what they saw happen (which is the last thing we want) and 2) makes it look as if he's making excuses.

However, the first time Robme starts in on another bald-faced lie, I would love to see Obama turn to him and say "Governor Romney, as a former President from your own party once said, 'well, there you go again'" (and then, of course, debunk his lie thoroughly). It would be utterly devastating!

"No one is going to watch the last two debates?". That's crazy. Maybe they wouldn't have if Obama had cleaned Mitt's clock in the first debate, because they'd figure the race was over. But now that it's a horse-race again, I'm sure of high ratings for the next two. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if the next debate draws more viewers than the last one.

because what I saw was Romney lying out his ass, being unchecked by the moderator and Obama answering the questions in an articulate and fair manner. Sure Romney threw him a bit with his complete flip flops but Obama did a good job with the questions he was asked.

And I think lots of people will be watching the next debate. I know I will. And I think, Obama being the intelligent guy that he is and knowing Romney's chameleon like abilities will handle the debate just fine.

I love how facts get in the way of people's thinking sometimes.

I don't think the second one will top the first this year but there will be a lot of people watching.

sound like a threat.

I'm not sure you're reading what I wrote with the proper intonation.

"I was being polite" in New York-ese means "And that's why you don't have a broken face."

It will look a bit rude but that 10% faster speak is intended to not allow a single second of silence to speak.

Romney interrupts, so Obama should cut him off.

Bring up the 47%, bring up Bain, bring up what Romney said about going to emergency rooms and dying at home, bring up GM, heck bring up Seamus. Bring up the flip-flopping.

Bring up his record in Mass. Why isn't Romney leading in polls over there?

Romney got away with so much in the last debate.

In the Republican primary debates his opponents called him out on everything. They were rude in those debates. Republicans are rude.

Romney has spewed out so much garbage.
