Clinton trounces Sanders in South Carolina, pivots to Trump

Hillary Clinton won a remarkable 87 per cent of the black vote, better than Barack Obama did in 2008.

HOUSTON—Hillary Clinton demolished Bernie Sanders by nearly 50 percentage points in South Carolina’s Democratic presidential primary on Saturday, demonstrating an overwhelming supremacy with African-Americans that could cripple Sanders’s candidacy in the next three weeks.

Clinton earned a remarkable 87 per cent of the black vote, exit polls found, an even higher percentage than Barack Obama earned against her in 2008. While Sanders never expected a South Carolina win, his extreme weakness with the black community is a full-blown crisis for his campaign.

With 98 per cent of districts reporting, Clinton had 74 per cent of the vote, Sanders 26 per cent.

Sanders, a left-wing Vermont senator, was again competitive among white voters. But black voters make up about 61 per cent of the electorate, and they overwhelmingly favoured the former secretary of state, senator and first lady who vowed to protect the legacy of the first black president.

Sanders’s inability to connect with African-Americans bodes poorly for his chances on the pivotal March 1 “Super Tuesday.” Clinton is leading in the polls in nine of the 11 states on the Tuesday calendar, including every one with a substantial black population. And she has now won two convincing victories since Sanders rode a wave of youth support to a win in New Hampshire and a near tie in Iowa.

saying that the southern state results should be ignored, because they're "red" "Confederate" states that won't go Democratic in the GE anyway.

Those posts were attempting to disenfranchise the millions of black Democrats in those states. Black Democrats whose primary votes are just as legitimate as those from safe Democratic states like New York and California.

Their votes matter, in spite of what was posted here yesterday.

be interesting. I just heard on my local news that Hillary is expected to win all states except for Vermont. I was getting a cup of coffee at the time and didn't hear or see how they came up with that claim. ( I am in the Pgh tv market).

Had not occurred in 2008. The Charleston Church, the Mothers still had their children in 2008. Gabby Gifford had been injured, I think the voters are informed and responded.
