2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumI spent some time listening to people in town today.
I'm not anywhere close to SC; I'm on the other end of the country in the Pacific North West. Not in a blue region, but a solidly red region.
On my way into town I saw my very first Sanders bumper sticker. I've yet to see a Clinton sticker. There are plenty of stickers for Trump and Carson; those are the only Rs I've seen.
Once there, I spent a couple of hours with some high-school age boys, some who will be of voting age when our primary arrives, and a man in his late 70s. They were all talking about recent debates and candidates. So I just listened.
The old guy says he's voting for Clinton. One young guy wishes the Republicans would have run a libertarian...one of the Pauls...but won't be voting for HRC. He prefers Sanders. He was the only Republican in the room, but says he's registering as a Democrat to vote for Sanders. The rest of the young people, voting age and not, were all, in a solid block, supporting Sanders.
I just listened. Eventually, they turned to me and said, "Well? Who are you supporting?" I simply lifted an eyebrow, and one of the younger boys grinned and said, "Oh, yeah. The socialist." And then gave me a high five.
I was thrilled to see all of that youthful energy focused on positive change. I hope they will, now and especially in the coming years, be part of the force that turns the tide.

(4,713 posts)that they actually need to go out & vote. In SC the under 30 is polling at about 1%.

(46,179 posts)Those who would be old enough were excited, those who won't be are jealous. They didn't need me to lecture them about showing up to vote, lol.
And, of course, in our state they don't go anywhere to vote. The ballot comes to us.

(4,713 posts)I remember when I first become became legal to vote, I was so excited.
I've been voting since '78, but I have to say that since I moved to Oregon, I really love getting my ballot a couple of weeks ahead of time, curling up in a comfy chair with my voters info booklet, my 'puter, some coffee, and my ballot, and then just putting it in the mail when I'm done. If I don't get it done in time, there are ballot boxes around I can drop it in. The closest is in the parking lot of the local library. No lines, no stress.
