2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumDoes anyone remember what the terms of Olbermann's exit were?
Isn't the future of this country worth breaking a contract deal, Keith?
It was our devotion to you that gave you impetus.
Isn't it time to come back to the game?
We really need you now.
Really.

(19,089 posts)What I was hoping to hear; what were the REASONS for his departure ?
Didn't he donate to a campaign ? ... they called it a conflict of interest ?
Now we have MANY MANY so called pundits who are stacked to the gills with the filthy lucre of a couple of well known campaigns, yet there is no 'Olbermann' response by the networks ?
Frustrating ....

We really need him.

What makes me say that was his behavior on his gig after MSNBC. The name of that channel escapes me now. Could it have killed him to have been a little bit of a team player there? Of course the production wasn't what he was used to. He was sucking up a hell of a lot of money after all.
I remember watching him a couple times when they made minor mistakes. His obvious displeasure only highlighted it to all of us. A couple of times he could have faked it and we would hardly have noticed. It wasn't quite like "Billdo's" "fuck it, we'll do it live!" tantrum, but he didn't make himself look much more professional than his crew. The man is good at what he does when he wants to be though.

This is not an original tweet, except for what I add at the end and current positions in quotes:
Joe Adalian @TVMoJoe
Let's review: Within one year, @msnbc has canceled/minimized shows with:
--@JoyAnnReid "Correspondent"
--@alexwagner "UP?"
--@TheRevAl "Sundays"
--@MHPshow "Wake Forest Professor"
--@edshow "RT America"
- @finneyk "HRC team"
- toure
6 of these 7 shows are African-American hosted, and Ed was a union guy against the TPP.

(1,278 posts)CNN, who is my goto network and has been since day one 36 years ago, has 2 A-A hosted shows Newsroom with Fredricka Whitfield on weekends and CNN Tonight with Don Lemon @10P ET. New Day has Michaela Pereira and New Day weekend has Victor Blackwell has part of a cast.
Fox News only has Harris Faulkner, moderator of Outnumbered daily and Insiders on Sunday. She also is the main sub for Shepherd Smith. Arthel Neville may still be on weekends, but I don't have cable any more.

(9,314 posts)They kept making him offers because they really, really wanted him to come on over. Olbermann had heard rumors NBC was going to merge with COMCAST, and he felt like if that happened he would be muzzled. So he had his lawyer enter into negotiations with MSNBC to let him out of his contract. It took months. The last details were finally agreed upon that last night we saw him broadcasting. He got a message that that show would be his last, and he only had a brief moment to say goodbye.
Turned out Current did have a lot of production problems, including not paying the electric bill and there being no lights when Olbermann broadcasted, and so eventually that relationship ended with fireworks. Everyone knows Current and Olbermann eventually settled the lawsuit, but the terms were never made public.
I have never seen anyone who could rise to the heights Olbermann did in broadcasting. It is indeed a terrible loss.

(1,278 posts)the standard non-compete was enforced prior to his Current TV gig. This is the same network that fired Cenk Uygur and Ed Schultz despite being competitive ratings wise. Rev Al was only in his show because Comcast was trying to curry favor to purchase Time Warner Cable, which didn't fly. He didn't get ratings, but stayed on the air longer than would be expected in my opinion due to the previous sentence.
