http://www.salon.com/2015/10/15/the_worst_thing_hillary_clinton_has_ever_done/During the debate, Clinton touted her years at the Children's Defense Fund. Here's the truth she didn't talk about
I dont take a back seat to anyone when it comes to progressive experience and progressive commitment, Hillary Clinton insisted in the debate. You know, when I left law school, my first job was with the Childrens Defense Fund, and for all the years since, I have been focused on how were going to un-stack the deck, and how were gonna make it possible for more people to have the experience I had.
This is true Clinton not only worked with Childrens Defense Fund (CDF), a non-profit advocacy organization that seeks to help American youth; she served as the head of its board.
...
Hillary, as First Lady, advocated strongly for the restructuring of welfare. Her former co-workers at CDF, on the other hand, were infuriated. CDF founder and President Marian Wright Edelman declared that President Clintons signature on this pernicious bill makes a mockery of his pledge not to hurt children.
Hillary Clinton is an old friend, but they are not friends in politics, the CDF president told Democracy Now in a 2007 interview. At the time, CDF profoundly disagreed with the forms of the welfare reform bill, and we said so, Marian Wright Edelman explained.

Childrens Defense Fund Releases Tribute Video Honoring Hillary Rodham Clinton
Washington, DC The Childrens Defense Fund (CDF) releases a video entitled Hillary Rodham Clinton: Strong and Effective Voice for Children today as it celebrates forty years of champions changing the odds for children. The video features CDF President Marian Wright Edelman and Former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton discussing Secretary Clintons work with CDF when it first began and the growing need for investments in the education and health of children.
CDF is pleased to recognize Hillary Rodham Clinton, who has been a tireless voice for children. Shes brilliant. She cares deeply about children. She perseveres. Shes an incredibly hard worker, and she stays with it. Shes done extraordinarily well in everything shes ever done. and Im just so proud of her, said Marian Wright Edelman, President of the Childrens Defense Fund.
Secretary Clinton states, Its the mission that CDF has stood for that Im proud that I was a small part of promoting We worked hard in the White House. We certainly appreciated the efforts of organizations like CDF kind of, you know, charging ahead.
Hillary Rodham Clinton joined CDF as a young staff attorney right out of law school and knocked on doors to research and help prepare CDFs first landmark report, Children Out of School in America a major catalyst for the enactment of the Education for All Handicapped Children Act, now the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. She became a CDF board member and ultimately board chair until she became First Lady.

Maybe Hillary will do better for children as President than she did when she worked with her husband's admin. I suppose we can hope that she does. On the other hand I don't think there is any maybe about Senator Sanders position on helping children. He certainly does not think we should deport them to send a message.

(85,998 posts)This tribute was in 2013, AFTER Hillary had actually made her OWN mark in public service as an elected official.
It blows your post out of the water. Using Ms. Edelman as a wedge against Hillary is bogus.

(18,133 posts)By 2007 she had completed a full term as senator. Her 'tribute' only proves to me that Clinton is a powerful person with connections. She has record that is always changing with the political wind. We are constantly told to ignore her bad decisions and focus on only her good ones. Bernie on the other hand is consistent. Like it or not as First Lady she helped to dismantle aid to children - that is part of her legacy.

i said that she was a smart woman who did not to want to alienate a powerful politician.

(85,998 posts)...you'll realize how insulting that is to Ms. Edelman.
I take her at her word.
i guess you suggest she didn't mean what she said in 07, or that Hillary made a miraculous turn around since then. I am open to evidence of such a turn around.

(1,021 posts)How did she help children when she was on Walmart's board, a company who pays its workers starvation wages and engages relentlessly in union busting?
How did she help children when she repeatedly advocated and lobbied for "tough on crime" legislation, including three strikes laws, and her racist gem about child "super predators"?
How did she help children when she advocated and lobbied for NAFTA, which wrecked homes throughout the US as parents lost their jobs and expanded the use of child labor in Mexico?
How did she help children when the Iraq sanctions she supported caused the deaths of at least half a million Iraqi kids?
How did she help children when she cast a vote for the Iraq war? Hundreds of thousands dead kids, and even more orphaned, and an out of control birth defect rate resulting from the use of depleted uranium weaponry--how did that help kids? Somebody please enlighten me.
How did she help children when she bragged and indeed laughed (on tape!) about sliming an alleged child rape victim on the stand?
The sad part is, I could go on.

Isn't that the similar excuse Sanders uses repeatedly about why he voted for some less that acceptable legislation, "it would have passed anyway"?
