2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumBernie is a Yuuuuuge MENSCH
Watching him on the CNN Town Hall, for some reason, that came across really strongly -- stronger than I've seen before..
Always been a fan of Bernie, his views, his honesty and a connoisseur of Angry Bernie.
But beyind that -- when it comes to being a HUMAN BEING -- He's the Real Deal. (You can't fake that.)
Mensch (Yiddish: מענטש? mentsh, cognate with German: Mensch "human being" means "a person of integrity and honor."[1] The opposite of a "mensch" is an "unmensch" (meaning: an utterly unlikeable or unfriendly person). According to Leo Rosten, the Yiddish maven and author of The Joys of Yiddish, "mensch" is "someone to admire and emulate, someone of noble character. The key to being 'a real mensch' is nothing less than character, rectitude, dignity, a sense of what is right, responsible, decorous."[2] The term is used as a high compliment, expressing the rarity and value of that individual's qualities.

(20,453 posts)I'm making myself watch HRC now.
I'm pretty sure I don't sense the same thing coming from Hillary.
Again.... "I, I, I, I.... "Me Me Me Me"

(12,685 posts)Bernie has integrity and he believes passionately in what he is fighting for. He is a good and kind soul but tough.
Some people mistakenly think that if you have these attributes it will make you weak. But they are wrong.

(625 posts)Agree so much. Bernie looked a little down to me tonight but he was such a mensch --- clearly was speaking from his heart. I think he is a unique and wonderful person. Completely agree with your post.

(1,178 posts)In my semi-Yiddish speaking mishpocha. There are certain Yiddish words that exist, but are rarely if ever used. Unmensch is one. "Excellent" is another. I remember our coming across this strange word in Yiddish class and everybody, including the fluent instructor, being stumped. When we looked it up and found out it meant "excellent," we had a good laugh. None of us had heard that word before!
"Dad, I got into Harvard!" "So you couldn't get into Stanford?"
"Mom, I just made ten million dollars!" "Mrs Goldberg's son Joel, the dentist, made a billion dollars from inventing a new toothbrush."
I still can't remember the word for excellent. Gotta look it up again!

Town hall forums are more comfortable for him.

(1,021 posts)Ironically TYT seemed to feel that everything I considered a strong point was a weak point tonight, but whatever.
What was weird was the spirituality question. Cuomo basically said, "You've been asked Question X and given Answer Y. Let me ask you Question X again." What the heck was that?
Anyway, I thought the response was fantastic and incredibly moving, more than in the past.
It was also lousy to give Hillary free air time for her ad, disguised in the form of a question. He could have just as easily asked, "You've been accused of being a single issue candidate, how do you respond?"
I didn't watch all of Hillary's portion, but I'm sort of guessing they didn't play any of Bernie's ads and asking for a response. Correct me if I'm wrong though, and I'll be pleasantly surprised.

(5,614 posts)to the religion question. As soon as Cuomo started down that road I thought there was some sort of "gotcha" coming up, like Moses would show up to endorse HRC, but Sanders knocked the question right out of the park. Incredible.
Also incredible was his remark about how the opposition to Obama was nothing less than racism. I know we know that's true but that's the kind of thing people just don't say on national television. Sanders also pointed out that even though he was the son of a Polish immigrant and running for president nobody ever asked to see his birth certificate. He pointed to his wrist and said maybe that was because of his skin color.
To me it was like Trump the Chump calling out Bush for lying our way into Iraq.
Hillary did very well, IMHO, though I didn't care for her pointing out some of her supporters in the audience. I especially didn't care for her calculated use of the women whose kids had been killed by cops and thugs.
However, many people know that HRC is at her best when she's under a lot of pressure. I think Cuomo was surprisingly not-on-her-side tonight. Too much to hope CNN is trying to pass for honest journalism though. As soon as they could they switched over the GOPuke debacle.
I really think Trump the Chump is going to end up their nominee. Amazing.

(3,017 posts)Bernie was talking about an issue and said something like "here's an issue where Secretary Clinton and I disagree." Some in the crowd started to boo at the mention of her name and Bernie immediately started shaking his head no, threw up his arms and said something like "no, we're not going to do that. I have known Secretary Clinton for a long time and respect her and like her, and we're not going to do that." The boos vanished immediately and there was applause for Bernie for cutting it off.

Bernie is also a grumpy old crank, not perfect....But he's a mensch, much more so than anyone else on either side of this race.

(3,021 posts)A President has to project a vision for everyone to get inspired, etc but also s/he has to point to the right direction from the right motivation for the best possible way. Not from ego but for the good cause. --- One thing important is that we need to surround him closely after he is elected President so that he is not taken away from the real place he is standing right now.
