2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumto everyone who now thinks this race is over, SAVE IT
first of all, congrats to hillary for today.
second, i am actually seeing threads by h supporters, which does not shock me, and b supporters, which DOES shock me, that this is basically over.
SAVE IT, K?
the delegate split from tonight is basically even, so they are virtually tied for delegates. and don't even start in the superdelegate bullshit, they will switch if necessary.
its also important to note that hillary did well in the two caucus states, in other words, states where many voters are disenfranchised. twitter today had accounts of traffic, long lines, people in charge not knowing what they were doing, people being shut out, not being able to register, etc. hmmmm who is likely to register at the last minute? young (bernie) voters.
so lets see what happens when all the people can vote, and ties are not decided by coin tosses, and people aren't closed out of the process. oh, wait...we already had a primary...and bernie won by 22 points!
so for those of you wanting to discourage bernie supporters for continuing a fight in what is essentially a tied race, i say fuggetabout it, in the best nyc accent i can muster.
have a nice evening.

(15,139 posts)another thread and was accused by a Hillary supporter of making a threat. Those of us who reside in the real world understand that after the dirty campaign Hillary is waging in the primary, she is turning off a lot of Bernie Sanders fans, particularly young people who are responding to his message and not interested in backing Wall Street's favorite candidate. And Republicans do hate her -- with blinding, intense hate. She would bring them out in record numbers just for the thrill of voting against her.
This thing is far from over though, and Hillary supporters can crow all they want, but we Bernie voters may just get the last laugh.

(5,420 posts)No republican has anywhere newer the amount of dirt and baggage she has. The republican base would be super stoked to come out and vote against her while half the dems would be holding their noses to bother to vote for her. Lowest dem turnout in history against highest republican turnout in history. We all lose.
ffr
(22,674 posts)Both sides were gleeful of the turnout. Nobody was spiking the football. The takeaway was that Democrats need to show up in force to ensure the principles of Bernie & Hillary are what wins on election day.
If you're one of those who feels so strongly about your candidate that you choose to sit out this election in protest, you're hurting us all, including your candidate who needs more state representatives to help pass bills in the house.
Get out and vote. Encourage everyone to vote. We need the Republicans out. They're the enemy!

(22,674 posts)Everyone and I mean everyone was cheering for the big turn out, even the Republicans who switch party affiliation today. DNC forecast 15% expected turnout, but places were sending people outside, the turnout was beyond their expectations. The one I was at filled the entire school to capacity. I was surprised the Fire Marshal wasn't there to force precincts out of doors. Both sides were respectful of the other, as big-house Democrats typically are. Lots of outspoken Bernie supporters excited about their candidate, Hillary supporters were there to solidify her victory, but again respectful both ways and lively conversations with lots of smiles and laughter.
66% of those who caucused today were reported to be first time democratic voters and first time caucus voters. Our precinct went decidedly in favor of Hillary, even though we had to give up a delegate due to rounding. Had it not, it would have been 2 -1 in favor of Hillary.
I'm hopeful that what comes of this is that no matter the winning candidate, Democrats come out and vote in November for Democratic candidates. Let's sweet this scourge of Republican obstructionism to progress out and keep sweeping until we have elected officials who represent our views.
That's what I hope comes of today's NV caucus results.
Good job to all Democrats who came out today to support their candidate, register to vote and had their voice and concerns heard.

(14,881 posts)My first vote was for McGovern. I've voted straight line democrat since. Except last election when no democrat was running for selectman, so I picked the independent. Turned out he is a left-leaning indie, so that was even better, lol! I just stayed independent until 2003 when I registered dem in protest against W.
But I must say I'm very disheartened by the process and what appears to be significant gamesmanship by the establishment.
If the current trajectory continues, I may well drop out completely. I remember that by the end of the '08 primary, I despised both Clinton and Obama.

I can understand the BSers not wanting to say die, but NV was Bernie's Waterloo. He's now heading into contests where Hillary already has YUGE leads. Her NV win means that any wavering Hillary voters will stop wavering. He's lost the momentum entirely that he had coming out of NH.
The narrative in the media has already shifted to Bernie's weaknesses. They are pointing out that his revolution is translating into LOWER voter turnout - not helpful when your message is building a groundswell of support that will change things in DC. It shows that his miracle cure for being an effective socialist president is snake oil.
The coming primaries will only reinforce that narrative.

(15,139 posts)The Democratic Party establishment has little interest in the 99%. The lip service and crumbs half-heartedly thrown our way by Hillary in-between big donor fundraisers is insulting. I don't think she will ever be President though. She'd have to win back a huge majority of the Bernie supporters, somehow earn the trust of Independents, and suppress the Republican vote. Nothing makes a Republican happier and more motivated than the thought of voting against a Clinton.

(145,666 posts)A while back the Sanders team was focusing on caucus states and taking a play out of the Obama playbook http://www.politico.com/story/2016/01/bernie-sanders-iowa-obama-playbook-218137
Story Continued Below
The idea is to take advantage of the caucus format, which tends to reward campaigns with the most dedicated partisans. The caucuses play to Sanders strength in another important way they are largely held in states that are heavily white, which helps Sanders neutralize Clintons edge with minority voters.
With a dozen such contests coming before the end of March and Clinton expected to perform well on March 1, the first big multi-state primary day -- the caucuses are emerging as an integral part of Sanders long-shot plan.
Caucuses are very good for Bernie Sanders, explained chief Sanders strategist Tad Devine, likening the 2016 strategy to the one he deployed as Mike Dukakis field director in 1988. Caucuses tend to be in the much-lower turnout universe, and having people who intensely support you in events like that makes a huge difference. You saw that with President Obama in 2008, and youre going to see it with Bernie Sanders."
