2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forum"Luis Gutiérrez: Sanders Voted With Republicans"
The same year, House Republicans were playing politics on behalf of their friends in the Minutemen, the vigilantes who set up outposts at the border to hunt immigrants. Republicans even crafted a bill that played right into one of their right-wing conspiracy theories that the U.S. government was somehow guiding immigrants past the Minutemen camps in the desert.
And when Republican Representative Jack Kingston put forward an amendment restricting the Department of Homeland Security from revealing information about groups like the Minutemen a pure fantasy driven by anti-immigrant pandering to the right-wing -- Representative Sanders took the bait, split with Latinos and progressives in Congress, and voted in favor of this absurd measure. I guess the campaign he was running for Senate in Vermont at the time was more important to him than standing up for decency and common sense when our community was on the line.
It did not get better when he got to the Senate. The next year, while Hillary was working hard to help Ted Kennedy and myself and the broad bipartisan coalition that backed comprehensive immigration reform bill, Senator Sanders voted against it six times. He even went on the Lou Dobbs show on CNN the number one propaganda broadcast of the anti-immigration movement at the time to proclaim how immigrants were bad for the American economy and other twisted ideas about immigrants. It was straight from the Republican anti-immigration playbook.
. . .
Even Representative Steve King, one of the most staunchly anti-immigrant members of Congress, stated, I admire Bernies passion and I notice that his immigration position is closer to mine than it is [to] some of the presidential candidates on the Republican side.

(51,907 posts)For one, the "akin to slavery" quote isn't made up: The SPLC did publish a report in 2007, "Close to slavery: Guestworker programs in the United States," that likened the existing H2A and H2B guest worker programs to modern servitude.
The report looked at the conditions of about 121,000 guest workers living in the United States including those in forestry, agriculture, and seafood preparation and found high fatality rates, lack of basic medical care, and few means of redress.
"It is such an appalling program in terms of the power disparity between worker and employer," said Mary Bauer, the report's author and the executive director of the Legal Aid and Justice Center, in an interview on Friday. "That's just too much power for an employer to hold."
The report adds: "Guestworkers do not enjoy the most fundamental protection of a competitive labor market the ability to change jobs if they are mistreated. If guestworkers complain about abuses, they face deportation, blacklisting or other retaliation."

(53,093 posts)How do you defend that vote by Bernie?
I guess all immigration reform is now bad since he voted against them all until very recently. If he believes that, he has a responsibility to level with voters rather than trying to pretend he has a different view.
Do you submit the Democratic Party platform should now align itself with the GOP, since Bernie voted with them on the 2007 bill and every one leading up to it since 1996?
Thank goodness the workers of America have Jim Dimint and Mitch McConnell championing them, along with Bernie.
And of course Steve King: I admire Bernies passion and I notice that his immigration position is closer to mine than it is some of the presidential candidates on the Republican side.

I'm relieved to hear that we won't be seeing any more criticism of Clinton's war vote since apparently the only criteria for acceptability is now that another Democrat voted for something.

(12,530 posts)No, I'm not going to go fetch every piece of legislation you want to talk about, but I'll give you a free shot. Give me a piece of legislation, and I'll provide the best answer I can after researching it.
But I can already tell you what I'm going to find. I'll find that Sanders had a principled reason to vote the way he did. I may or may not agree with his reasoning, but he will be found to have had solid, progressive reasoning that led him to vote the way he did. Otherwise, we're left with some ridiculous notion that Sanders is a racist. There's no one who believes that.
Got stuff going on today, so give me some time, but throw that legislation over the wall and I promise to address it.

Barbara Boxer, Ted Kennedy, and Russ Feingold apparently support slave labor.
At a certain point the excuses become pathetic. He voted against that bill just as he did every immigration reform bill since 1996, just as the GOP did. According to you, the GOP better protects workers rights than does the Democratic party. A number of people believe that, but then they are Republicans.
