Arrest photo of young activist Bernie Sanders emerges from Tribune archives
Chicago Tribune archival photo of a young man being arrested in 1963 at a South Side protest is Democratic presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders, his campaign has confirmed, bolstering the candidate's narrative about his civil rights activism.
The black-and-white photo shows a 21-year-old Sanders, then a University of Chicago student, being taken by Chicago police toward a police wagon. An acetate negative of the photo was found in the Tribune's archives, said Marianne Mather, a Chicago Tribune photo editor.
"Bernie identified it himself," said Tad Devine, a senior adviser to the campaign, adding that Sanders looked at a digital image of the photo. "He looked at it he actually has his student ID from the University of Chicago in his wallet and he said, 'Yes, that indeed is (me).'" Sanders, a U.S. senator from Vermont, was traveling Friday near Reno, Nev., on the eve of the state's Democratic presidential caucuses.

Believing that progressive policies exist only to sustain the party is crazy.
I don't care if he calls himself "Late for dinner". So long as I agree with his policies and he earns my trust I can support him.

(15,021 posts)The Party, whether it Democratic or Republican, is a Religion to them. It's all about The Party, not the ideals that construct it. That can be bartered away if the price is right.
That's why the US polictical system is as broken as it is right now, and the reason why both party memberships are at an all-time low.

(5,018 posts)isn't respectable or progressive, he's forced to associate with them because we have a 2 party system and he doesn't want to hand the election to Republicans, so good for him for being willing to associate with the party of DOMA, private prisons, war on drugs and no public option, of corporate fealty and the full backing of a candidate that used dog whistles in her last campaign, in order for the greater good.
Being a Democrat means shit. Being a progressive means a lot.

(57,936 posts)His views on economic as well as social issues are staunchly Democratic.
Hillary was still a Republican in the 1960s. Still a Republican while Bernie was being arrested for civil rights protests.
Bernie is a better Democrat than Hillary any day. He stands for working people. Hillary ?????????????
Takes money from Wall Street and every wealthy person she can. And she takes as much as they are willing to give.
If we as Democrats are to continue to have a party and exist in the political spectrum of America, we have to get the big money out of politics.
Bernie is walking the walk.
Hillary is not.
Actions speak louder than words.

(57,349 posts)He's the idiot who claimed that a picture of Bernie in the Chicago archives was really someone named Bruce Rappaport. When he was proven wrong by the award winning photographer who took the picture (who produced more images) he had a temper tantrum and started trolling people on Twitter. Much hilarity ensued and he subsequently blocked every single Bernie supporter.
He's one reason why we're making such a big deal out of this footage.

(5,191 posts)A self proclaimed "Goldwater Girl" can insinuate that Bernie Sanders was not really a Civil Rights Activists and therefore blacks should support her. So much like the swift-boating of a war hero in John Kerry by a spoiled, daddy protected, champagne unit, AWOL loser in George W. Bush. If the media would do their fucking jobs, these bull shit stories would never be allowed to fly in the first place.

(2,522 posts)Senator Sanders seems likely to understand, forgive, and work with Mr Lewis, whether Mr Lewis did this of his own free will or not. I rather suspect that Secretary Clinton - and the core Democratic Party establishment - would not be as forgiving if Mr Lewis supported Senator Sanders, and Secretary Clinton won the nomination and the presidency.
ALBliberal
(2,349 posts)respect for Lewis he has already forgiven him. Also agree that the reverse situation would not bode well politically for Mr. Lewis. What I was getting at was that Mr. Lewis may feel regret in his heart on a personal level not a political level. I also think it's possible that Lewis was not fully aware of the extent and seriousness of Bernies activism.
GeoWilliam750
(2,522 posts)As some one who went through so much at the time, one wants to believe that his sense of justice is undiminished. If he did this at some one else's bidding, I would hope that he can recall the courage of his youth.
It is also entirely possible that he genuinely believes Secretary Clinton to be the best choice, and did this because he thought it best. Whatever his choice may be, however, I would hope that he would reflect on the needs of his constituents, then act with untiring fearlessness and resolution, unmindful of personal consequences.
We are at a tipping point in history, and the matter is finely balanced. The addition of even a light touch from either side can have epoch-making consequences.
