Mayor of Burlington
Voted as one of Americas best mayors by U.S. News & World Report in 1987.
...He won re-election three times, defeating Democratic and Republican contenders.
Caused voter turnout to double during his tenure.
Burlington became the first city in the country to fund community-trust housing under Sanders leadership.
He not only balanced the city budget, but undertook ambitious downtown revitalization projects. He even helped bring in a minor-league baseball team to the town, the Vermont Reds.
He sued the towns local cable franchise and won reduced rates for customers.
Kept a developer from turning important waterfront property into condominiums, hotels, and offices to be used only by the wealthy and affluent. Instead, it was made into housing, parks, and public space. Even today, the area still has many parks and miles of public beach and bike baths, including a science center.
Provided new firms with seed funding, and helped businesses create trade associations. He funded training programs to give women access to nontraditional jobs and even gave special attention to women wanting to become entrepreneurs.

(10,622 posts)Everyone knows that the lower classes can only be kept strong via a Vigilant and aggressive form of social Darwinism that weeds out those too weak to make good servants.
To help them in any way defeats the purpose! It is better as is being proven via a recent promising experiment to make them pay premiums for health insurance (forget care that is a bit of smoke and mirrors, a promise insurance exists to make sure that tho it may appear within grasp is seldom actually received)
This experiment has proven to help the millionaire middle, while making damn sure that because of their meager value as humans (reflected in their already too high wages that should in a healthy society not exceed $1.00 an hr) Millionaires will increasing their wealth off of their lessers as they pay premiums, while still assuring they will never be able to pay the added money (via co-pays and deductibles) to receive any actual health care.
This is but one of many excellent ways to ensure that the herd is thinned leaving the strongest while harvesting some of the money they should not have been given in the first place for their labor, as all civilized men know, if one has to do actual labor, one does not deserve the respect of a true equal (or money at all but that ship sailed after that Lincoln fellow turned traitor) such people as workers are only good as breeding stock, a stock that we must finally admit is long past due for a culling!
