Related: About this forumImagine if Hillary had accused Sanders of distancing himself from Obama to pander to white voters
All hell would break loose. Sanders supporters would be blowing up this board and the rest of social media right now.
But Sanders accuses Hillary of supporting the President to pander to black voters and he's getting nothing but love from his folks.

(12,769 posts)What if Hillary supporters could believe that most of us actually voted for Obama, not because he was black. but because he was the BEST candidate at the time. The exact reason most of us will be voting for Bernie this go around and would, no matter what race or sex he was.
In fact, if Bernie was female and any race, he would probably have the same growing support he does now.
Empowerer
(3,900 posts)is because she's trying to appeal to black voters.
That is no different than had Hillary Clinton claimed that Sanders was distancing himself from the President to appeal to white voters. You probably can't see that because it is very normal and common for people to single out and discuss minorities based on our race - black voters this, Latino voters that, etc. - but they get their hackles up the minute anyone refers to white voters because they don't think of white people as "white" but as "people."
So, you don't seem to have a problem with Sander identifying the President's race and singling out black voters as if we are so blind that we will just go along with anyone who supports the President because he's the same race as we are. But if the shoe were on the other foot, you would NEVER accept it because YOU don't ever see race, do you?

We're so grateful. Bernie's so good to us. Thank you, Bernie.
Now, we'll just sit quietly over here and not say a word while Bernie and his supporters insult us to your heart's content - after all, Bernie EARNED that right by being so good to us.

(194 posts)I have to give Hillary the benefit of the doubt on this one. I think she learned in her primary loss to Obama that allowing her campaign to use race issues even in subtle gestures in a negative manner to try and advance her campaign, does more harm than good. Because its one thing that Obama never did, and part of the reason he was given credit for running such a masterful campaign. I agree that she is hugging her arms around Obama because she knows he is very popular to a lot of Dems, and especially the black community which she believes is her firewall to win this primary. But if Obama was white, and equally as popular, I'm sure her tactic would remain exactly the same. Which is why I have to give her the benefit of the doubt. But I can understand why Bernie supporters would think she is doing it to pander to the black vote (If I was a Bernie supporter, I would be cynical as well), but they forget Obama is very popular across all ethnic groups in the Dem party.

(3,900 posts)One observation: It's one thing for Bernie supporters to think that she is pandering to the black vote - it's another thing for Sanders to think it and a completely different thing for him to SAY it out loud. That comment and the attitude it reveals are offensive and demonstrate something that many people have been saying - that he doesn't really get it when it comes to anyone outside of a narrow demographic that he's used to playing to.

(99,710 posts)President Obama is a great man and even greater president. My biggest regret is that I will not get to vote for him again.
I am the best witness for President Obama because I am a convert. I supported Hillary in 08 as I do now but he has won me over with his thoughtfulness, open mindedness , and fundamental decency.
We shall miss him, a lot.

(31,828 posts)It will be interesting to see him completely dodge President Obama.
Granted - there are MANY of his supporters who think Obama was a man of integrity who did an excellent job.
However, there are also many who despise him, consider him a Republican (at best 'light'), hate his policies, his wars, his taxes, his ACA, etc. etc. They wanted something 'different'.
They are getting something 'different' this election - but Sanders can't keep these indie voters and associate himself with President Obama at all.
See - Clinton CAN embrace him due to her base voters. She would be a freaking idiot if she didn't.
But Sanders CAN'T embrace him because there are those of us with raised eyebrows saying - wait?
That awful choice over there (Clinton) didn't suggest we primary him in 2012? But this awful choice over here (Sanders) did?
This election for me has come down to voting against the Republicans in November. Two awful choices. Two boomers. Two old ways of thinking. Too many nods to FDR. Too many arguments about shit that happened in the 1960's.
Just awful.
But the first one embrace te best President Ever in my book (blows FDR away because he didn't create new policies to deliberately stick it to black Americans) aon the campaign trail will possibly get me to spend an afternoon phone banking in the GE.
I've got a feeling I won't have to take time out of a Saturday Afternoon if Sanders is the nominee.
He's in between a rock and a hard place - and I *think* his advisors (NOT his supporters - I'm not attacking DUer's here because they don't make the rules of his campaign) are saying - stay on that rock.
Run against Obama's record.
When it comes to driving people to the polls as I did in 2008 and 2012 - I'm not going to be there for candidate Sanders.
DemocratSinceBirth
(99,710 posts)Let that sink in...
No Democrat can be elected president without enthusiastic support of African Americans. Though only 12.5 % of the population they provide 25% of the votes in a presidential election.
Not only is clinging to President Obama righteous it is prudent.
JustAnotherGen
(31,828 posts)And think of this -
My dad was home on leave in 1964. He voted in the 1960 election (Army Officer Abroad).
He couldn't physically vote.
Home was Alabama.
How many was it a matter of "I can't vote because I fear for my life" vs no interest in LBJ? Perhaps we would have - if we could have?
Look at that map from 1964.
