Huge Bernie supporter, but I have thought all along Clinton would win the nomination. Before Scalia's death I always thought it was at best 50/50 for Dems to win nomination, with GOP posed to win back the white house. Everything in the environment favored them. 8 years of Obama presidency is like 8 years of Bush to GOP base. Obama was once a generation type of charismatic leader who could get people to come vote even in times of pessimism and distrust in the government. Hillary is the opposed to that. After this primary season with Bernie, I did not see clear scenario she turns out the vote like Obama did to win. Her base is limited to mid-term voters, and we see what happens in those elections.
However with Scalia's death and GOP literally saying they will not approve anyone (politically stupid, why not delay instead?), they have put Obama on the ballot in '16. Not only they be seeing unfavorably by supposed moderates, but it will the Obama coalition will be voting to ensure Obama nomination is confirmed. Does the GOP not realize we had election 3.5 years ago where the electorate overwhelming gave the authority to Obama on matters such as this? This is politically stupid and unwinnable.

(643 posts)I'm not sure. As if this country wasn't divided enough, this is only going to make that great divide even wider. I'm pretty sure the gop base is going to be fired up. It's funny though, as the gop has proudly claimed that they are the great defenders of the Constitution and yet they are blatantly going to ignore their duty when it comes to approving Obama's nominee.

(13,776 posts)The replacing of a SC justice is no longer hypothetical. I think this is good for Democrats. Of course Republicans will come out to vote too, to decrease the risk of a long-term liberal majority on the court, but there are more of us than there are of them.
And young voters in particular, especially young women, will register and come out to vote when they realize that a woman's right to choose truly could absolutely disappear with a Republican in the White House, in addition to all the other bad things that would happen, politically and environmentally and economically and socially, if the Supreme Court locked down a conservative majority for years to come.
