2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumBernie Sanders won 2,095 votes in the New Hampshire Republican primary
In the days before New Hampshire's primaries, reporters encountered a curious phenomenon: Republicans or moderates who admitted a fondness for the Senate's only self-proclaimed democratic socialist. Plenty of them crossed party lines to vote for him in the Democratic primary -- and 2,095 took Republican ballots and wrote in the name of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt).
The write-in totals for the primary, released by New Hampshire's secretary of state Thursday, find that well more than half of Republican write-in votes were cast for Sanders, and 540 more were cast for former secretary of state Hillary Clinton. No other candidate, or "candidate" came close; Kanye West, the rapper and producer who has threatened to run for president in 2020, earned just one write-in vote. None of this surprised the Sanders campaign.
"He gets a significant Republican vote in Vermont, about 20 percent in the last Senate election," said spokesman Michael Briggs. "There was a Castleton University poll last year in Vermont that showed him tied for the lead among Republican White House hopefuls."

(26,549 posts)That primary where JFK got a larger margin wasn't particularly "contested", in that JFK didn't have a serious opponent. But it fits the definition of "contested" in that there was not an incumbent in the NH primary.

(6,785 posts)They could've focused on a write in campaign too. I'd pay hard cash to watch the talking heads come on and announce a democratic socialist won the primary for both parties.
If you stuffed some coal up their asses beforehand you could probably get a nice diamond crop by the time the day was over.

(27,310 posts)It is not a secret and easily googled. If any single DEMOCRATIC person is going to make a big deal about Bernie garnering Republican votes, then they are going to look in their own backyard.

(47,209 posts)is a good idea, and why you suggested it to me? I have a feeling that is not the case. And am confused why you would make bad suggestions? That seems odd and counter productive.
Again, I made no particular suggestion, just asking about yours.

(31,935 posts)I was there that day. It was stolen outright, as the records show. Both by Jeb's gang, and the SCOTUS.

(45,251 posts)than Democrats voted for Bush. Not only do I not know if it's true, I don't know what it proves, if anything.
One thing I do know: liberals don't vote Republican.

(24,010 posts)People of all kinds like him. He has very high favorability and trust numbers. And he has shown for decades that he can work very well with people whose political views are 180 from his.
I have to laugh when Hillary supporters claim that none of his programs can get through Congress (current Congress, they mean). He works very well with Congress critters of all stripes, and always gets a couple of good amendments into pukey bills. He is VERY EXPERIENCED at the workings of Congress, and is well-liked, even in these truly cruddy Congresses that Diebold/ES&S has given us. Is Clinton going to get anywhere with her queenly turn of head and nose in the air? No. She is the inexperienced one in that venue. And she doesn't have the personal warmth and likability to overcome it.
Also, Sanders will for sure pull a lot more Dems into Congress on his coattails, and then, in 2018, will vigorously stump the country for new progressives and a totally transformed Congress. And, if the Diebold/ES&S matter comes up (i.e., suspected electronically stolen elections) he will be ON it, in a way that Hillary would never think of doing. She no doubt LIKES private corporations tabulating our votes!
I tend to think Diebold/ES&S will back off for a while. They've accomplished fascist policies beyond their wildest dreams, leaving someone like Sanders with SO MUCH to undo! It will occupy his entire presidency, just undoing their harm. Same in the states. That was the purpose of 'TRADE SECRET' voting machines--to lock in fascist policies in so many ways, and in so many venues, that it would take decades for real democracy to reassert itself. Meanwhile, SO MUCH money was stolen from all of us and from our "commons" that even the biggest pigs in the 1% may be thinking it's best to pull back a bit, before the cow they've been mercilessly milking kicks them up side the head.
