2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumEric Garner's daughter released a powerful ad for Bernie [UPDATED with a comment from Erica Garner]
&feature=youtu.beThe Senator didnt reach out to me all of a sudden because he needs help with Black people. He didnt put out a press conference announcing that we would be working together. He didnt force me to frame my support of him around a subject matter that special interest groups that support him can get behind. They said we are glad to have your support, how do you want to plug in. You will see a lot of Black leaders handing out endorsements, think to yourself, have they historically been a rubber stamp for the establishment? I hope this expresses why I think Bernie is our guy!

(52,162 posts)If when Treyvon Martin's mother endorses Hillary it is evidence that she is exploiting tragedy, then why isn't this evidence Bernie is doing so? I think both people have every right to do what they are doing and endorse who they want but I have seen thread after thread and post after post savaging Hillary as a race baiting, tragedy exploiting viper for her endorsements so I do wonder just what the difference is.

(52,162 posts)I think people should endorse who they want, how they want, and when they want. I said that in 2004, I said that in 2008, and I have consistently said it this time.

(29,257 posts)What lies at the heart of the matter is the definition of "exploitation" and the judgment as to the candidate's sincerity.
If there is sincerity at the heart of it, and if the "endorser" approves of the use, I can't say it is "exploitative".
And I have never called it exploitative. You can check the record on that as well.

(30,099 posts)willingly and I get why they want to and it is courageous of them to do so.
With that said, these kinds of things make me a bit uneasy, advocacy which I support
but there is sometimes a fine line of exploitation..I don't want to see that happen.
Not accusing anyone in either camp, I just hate that they even need politicians
to help them...we should be way past this level of injustice.

I am glad this full version exists. I hope she can/would like to do a shorter version for TV--even though every visual and every word and every memory in this video is perfection.

I hope that runs on prime time around the country, not because it's an ad for Sanders, but because the personal impact of police injustice should be seen and understood by everyone in this country.

(819 posts)This election is so much more than Supreme Court justices or the economy. We all need to be fearless and come together and demand that injustices have no place in the US.
F the notion that politics is "a contact sport" and using division amongst us. I want real action and movement, not weasel words that turn into "My bad. Sorry. This just can't be done."

(55,981 posts)he is taking and putting his family at risk. I wish I had a link but when he was deciding to run for president he made a statement that he knew the risk that he and his family would face and was willing to take if millions would stand behind him. When I read that I literally felt guilty for asking him to take that risk. The Billionaires that support Clinton, in my opinion, are willing to do a lot in order to keep the profits rolling in. That's why they support Clinton. Yet I fear for the safety of Sen Sanders.

(291 posts)Well, today I heard the old guard of the civil rights movement speak out. Honestly there hasnt been much progress in the civil rights movement since Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated until recently. I sometimes doubt the old guard has the energy to move forward. Sometimes I wonder if they have been coopted into a failing system. However, there is a new generation, new leaders moving forward and one of them is in this video. Unlike the old, coopted guard of today, the new generation are learning the difficulty Rev King experienced. Like King, they are called terrorists, malcontents, and numerous racial epithets. They protest every week, sometimes every day, albeit without press coverage unless you count social media feeds. People underestimate them, but they will influence the future.

(57,936 posts)unarmed civilians should be subject to a trial in a federal court. We need a federal law that imposes criminal penalties for that kind of abuse of power by a law enforcement agent.
These cases should be tried by federal prosecutors in front of federal judges.
Federal prosecutors are less likely to consider local political factors in deciding whether to prosecute, and federal judges have lifetime appointments that should immunize them somewhat from the political pressure on judges in state courts.

(1,250 posts)Somehow we found a 100% REAL one in the politics game.
Not partial. Not trace. But 100% REAL.
Erica Garner has PROVEN it!
Bernie Sanders is THE ONE to vote for in this 2016 election for President.
The REAL ONE! THE REAL DEAL!!
If Obama didn't run in 2008, this wouldn't be possible.
That campaign set the coalition that paved the way for a Bernie Sanders to run totally from the grassroots.
He's not looking for politician endorsements or even union endorsements.
He's getting endorsements from people fighting from the ground floor.
That says it all.

(9,298 posts)I cannot fully express the combination of grief and hope that I see in you in this video. To watch one's father die in such a brutally public display is profoundly unimaginable for me. But I can say to you that you and your daughter are not alone. The man you love and call "Pop Pop" will live on in millions of our collective memories and in the spirit of the work that we all do.
