(57,349 posts)Find any group that includes men who use the internet, and you will find men who are behaving horridly. The idea that this would be something unique to men drawn to support Bernie Sanders, a candidate with an impeccable record on womens issues, is of course absurd, but the media and Hillary supporters have latched onto this convenient, if unsupported, narrative and treated it as gospel.
Emily Ratajkowski found the internet to be no kinder to a woman who supports Bernie Sanders than it is to a woman who supports Hillary Clinton. Online harassment is a serious issue, and it would be great if both campaigns addressed it in a productive way. All the campaigns in this election are heavy users of social media and if they presented a unified platform to address online harassment it could possibly make social media companies to take the issue more seriously.
However, by framing the discussion in a way meant to benefit Hillary Clinton alone, the pundits have accomplished little, save insulting Sanders supporters and deluding Bill Clinton into thinking sexism is an issue he can lecture about.
With Clinton surrogates Madeline Albright and Gloria Steinem joining in with the online mob to hurl sexist insults at Sanders female supporters coupled with the offensive spectacle of Americas most iconic practitioner of sexual harassment taking a stand on sexism, Hillary will likely need more than Bernie Bro thinkpieces to bridge the massive gap between her and Sanders among young women.

(57,349 posts)There was an op last year that said a vote for Bernie is a vote for white male rule.
Somehow we're less than equal if we don't do what's expected of us.

(2,125 posts)Jeez, that person either lives in some alternate universe or has an agenda. My guess would be the latter.
However, it was a woman who told me I'm going to hell for voting for Bernie. go figure.

(57,349 posts)And it speaks to a pattern among her female supporters, Steinem and Albright just encouraged more of the same.

(3,447 posts)...the accepted norm. This is no surprise. It's not unbreakable, but it takes very strong people to work around it's quietly-hidden boundaries and barriers. The amount of censoring done online would stagger most people who don't actively follow it. It always amazes me how few Redditors to this day understand how brigading, shadowbanning, and all the other censorship techniques on there work.
I rather think this was actually the intent of social media all along, and the Arab Spring was its testing ground.
Now that everyone is seeing the group labelling structure being used for its actual, intended purpose, they aren't liking it anymore. It's almost kind of amusing in a sad, sick way, having been on the 'out' side of the whole thing for so long, but at the same time it's not amusing at all because it's real pain that real people feel when this happens.
However, being fair to our Hillary campaign friends, it is also possible that this is being done by third party paid trolls. There are thousands of companies, the world over, who pay people to do those sorts of things. Some of them are even run by former CIA operatives.

(1,236 posts)Couldn't stomach it. But all the ones I read were along the lines of shut up and show us your tits, how dare you have an opinion. She would have got the exact same comments from the exact same people if she'd supported Hilary.
BTW I have never bought into the ridiculous Bernie bro meme either.

One of those vile responses said anything about Clinton. The rest were unfortunately run of the mill assholes.

You can't pin this on Hillary fans. Nice try though. As has been pointed out repeatedly, Hillary supporters are older and actually democrats. BernieBros consist of many young repubs and libertarians who aren't particularly interested in identity politics or political correctness.
