2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumIm beginning to think Hillary's big name endorsements are hurting her
I went to my monthly book group meeting this morning and had an interesting conversation about the campaign. There's a core group of @ 9 of us and we never talk politics so while I could probably guess after this many years on who would vote for whom, I'm not 100% certain. The local library hosts it monthly so it's entirely a neutral meeting
Anyway I can't drive at the moment so I get picked up by a fellow club member (40s white soccer mom) and the news is on the radio relating the story of the CBCPAC endorsement. I can't help myself and say "it looks like Hillary.has the Democratic party nomination sewn up".
My friend shakes her head and says "I'm sick of everyone telling me how great she is. Of course they're endorsing her, they don't want anything to change!"
She says she's undecided (and yes, I did give a big Bernie plug at that moment. )
By now we've picked up another friend (76 yr old retired teacher. Im actually.not sure of her race, she has.olive skin and brown eyes but could be any or no mixed race) who asks how we got onto this topic (its a book group - not politics at all). We discuss the HRC endorsements and she also says how it looks like "everyone" wanted this to be Bush v Clinton and she wasn't going to cooperate this time, no matter how much people who think they're so "important" push her.
I know these are anecdotes but!
This election is different in my opinion. I too am beginning to think the endorsements only serve now to underscore how tightly bound HRC and "important people" (aka the establishment ) really are. There's a mood afoot.in the nation. Its not going away

(31,828 posts)That they make political choices based upon what someone who is famous/politician/journalist/rap star/actress/etc. etc. says they are going to do/vote for?
Endorses are more 'awww that's nice' but all of these 'famous' people aren't really influencing my political decisions.
MHP herself could say she's voting for Trump and I wouldn't jump to vote for Trump.
So what's the value of an endorsement? Fund raising?

(6,829 posts)And its powerful.
HRC'S endorsements are coming across (to some obviously, not all) as coercive and illustrative of her position within that power structure.
They aren't persuasive in this election imo, in fact they're part of her problem

(12,754 posts)I really don't understand all this breathless excitement -- from both camps -- over who the fuck endorsed whom. Anyone who waits to see who endorses someone would be better off not voting. They're pretty weak minded.

Im certain nobody's waiting on an endorsement to change their mind.
But these endorsements arent having the effect she wanted, exactly the opposite more like

(23,730 posts)we see it as 1. suspicion of arm-twisting 2. revelation that it was a small nucleus making the decision and ignoring the membership. 3. revelation that it was to avoid retaliation. 4. revelation that it was in fact their PAC speaking for the org as a whole. 5. revelation of arm-twisting

(1,784 posts)is the establishment is backing the establishment candidate. People are fed up with the "good old boys "club. Absolutely, this hurts her.

(800 posts)it's the sense of the establishment making up its mind before asking the voters and then pushing back when the voters disagree.
