2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forum#ImnotkiddingMaddi trending as ‘urgent’ Clinton email mocked
A desperate-sounding email purportedly received by a woman from Hillary Clintons campaign during the New Hampshire primary spawned a flurry of memes and tweets mocking the candidate.
The email from HillaryClinton.com asks that the woman, identified only as Maddi, donate a dollar:
After tonights results roll in, keep this in mind: most of the country casts their primary ballots by the middle of March.
We absolutely, critically need to make sure Hillary comes out on top in the states that lie ahead.
But its the last line that has people gleefully tweeting:
Im not kidding, Maddi, Im asking you to give $1 right this second.
Memes aplenty here!

(24,411 posts)And the entire Internet has exploded about this. There were at least 20 people who had this on their FB feeds today --people of all ages.
One of my teenage daughters came up to me and showed me one of the memes--the Breaking Bad one.
And the fact that it was alerted on here at DU. The alert system ireally creates a little bubble in here sometimes. Things are much more sanitized in here, than they are on the rest of the 'net. I like that people can't insult each other and violate the TOS. However, when people alert just because their candidate gets zinged, thats a bit goofy.
People make fun of Bernie--his hair, his finger wagging, etc. some things these candidates do are great fodder for jokes, including the urgency of Hillary's $1 email.

(5,761 posts)It has absolutely NOTHING to do with the OP at all but it does have something to do with Twitter & the Oregon standoff and what is trending.
one_voice
(20,043 posts)it's in very poor taste. Who is the OP about? Oh, that's right.
I can almost guarantee you that if the same had been said about Sen. Sanders it would have been hidden; rightfully so. And a whole lot more people would have have had a whole lot more to say. Something along the lines of homophobic jokes.
I'm usually a 'meh' kinda person, I have a crude sense of humor--in private. I don't find this funny. I take other people's feelings into consideration. Apparently that's isn't a blip on your radar.
Hope you have a great day.
pinebox
(5,761 posts)I think it's kind of funny though how people aren't getting it. The OP may have been about "who" but the conversation was about what? Twitter.
Notice the hashtag?
You're missing the mark here.
pinebox
(5,761 posts)I'm curious. Because it has absolutely NOTHING to do with the OP at all but it does have something to do with Twitter & the Oregon standoff and what is trending.
Hekate
(90,714 posts)Everybody with a functioning brain also gets that "send dildos" was posted in a thread about Hillary Clinton. If "dildos" has "absolutely NOTHING to do with the OP" then why it is here and why do the adolescent-brained think it's "funny"?
Classy, pinebox, real classy.

pinebox
(5,761 posts)It has nothing to do with the OP but rather with the Oregon standoff and how it is trending on twitter as well. http://gawker.com/angry-militia-leader-stop-mailing-us-dildos-1752580458
VulgarPoet
(2,872 posts)...still in ill taste, after Christie's comments about Clinton especially with Camp Weathervane chomping at the bit to label anyone who supports Sanders as a racist, misogynist, or whatever the meme this week is.
pinebox
(5,761 posts)It has absolutely zero to do with Hillary or Bernie and the comment was about how that too was trending on twitter and how it was funny and they are right, it was flippin' hilarious. Twitter made an absolute mockery last night of the Oregon idiots and it was trending at #1.
Hekate
(90,714 posts)Do you think my protestations of innocence will stand up to a jury 6-1? Or do you think a Sanders jury will fail to find it funny when inserted into a Sanders thread?
Whaddyathink?
pinebox
(5,761 posts)But you still miss the point. Go re-read the original OP. You're trying to make said comments about a specific candidate when in fact it is NOT. What does it say again, something about twitter.
Now if you go ahead and realize that #OregonStandoff was trending #1 world wide last night which is what again? Oh ya bunch of RW loons and what was it that people on the Internet did to these RW loons?
Learn to social media.
Any questions?
NOTHING TO DO WITH A CANDIDATE. PERIOD.

(26,549 posts)Uh....not so much.
You also seem to be unaware that the Clinton campaign has repeatedly tried this $1 trick to reduce the size of their average donation.....and it hasn't been enough to bring down her average donation to below Sanders. Too many of her donations come from $2700 donors.
But if you'd like, you can head on down to Mexico for her next fundraiser! Lots of poverty there, thanks to NAFTA!

(26,549 posts)Clinton doesn't have a lot of small donors. So Sanders currently has a smaller average donation size.
The Clinton campaign would like to lower their average donation size so that they can then claim to be the candidate who is really supported by everyday people.

..her numbers of "regular little people" donating to her campaign.
So she can refute Bernie's numbers in the next debate.
Maybe she should have asked for a penny. Then all the little children could have been used to make a non-rich demographic for her.
BainsBane
(53,035 posts)She doesn't have Karl Rove's slush fund spending of her behalf.
Intersting how a campaign that claimed to be about getting money out of politics now mocks donation solicitations that aren't high enough to suit the sensibilities of the well-heeled.
The emails I get always say $38. They are geared toward the giving history of the recipient. I suppose my lack of wealth is just hysterical too. So much for equality.
Fawke Em
(11,366 posts)"She has to depend on small donations"
I've seen some cognitive dissonance on this board, but this one takes the cake. You honestly believe she relies on small contributions when she's raked in millions from Wall Street and some of the largest corporations on earth?
No one is laughing at your lack of funds because many of us are in the same spot, but I do wonder why you're supporting her if your lack of wealth is an issue. Surely, you can see which candidate gets money from the elite and which gets donations from working people.
BainsBane
(53,035 posts)(which itself is odd since she never ran for office until the 2000s).
This is 2016. Check your calendar. Bernie himself has raised hundreds of thousands from those same banks. The difference is that Clinton doesn't construct a campaign based on a false claim she repeats multiple times of day for months on end.
Additionally, if we are to believe Open Secrets, Universities and the US Postal Service have pacs or super pacs
that contribute to Sanders. You'll have to forgive me, but the notion that the Postal Service has a pac strains credulity.
That same list included corporations like Microsoft. And I never quite understood how Open Secrets could declare Citibank her leading contributor when under industries financial services ranks much lower on the list, with education and women's groups being near the top.
What is this whole meme about if it isn't how pathetic you all think it is that she needs to ask for $1 donations?
My lack of wealth is precisely why I don't support Sanders. That in combination with the fact I actually care about policy and not just slogans. Now, if thought the most crucial issues facing American were that families making over $250k a year shouldn't have to pay college tuition or their children face the indignity of working 10 hours a week to contribute to that education, I'd be for Sanders all the way.
Dretownblues
(253 posts)AverageSanders donation: $27
Average Clinton donation: $67
The only reason she is asking for a dollar is to get her average down.
frylock
(34,825 posts)jeff47
(26,549 posts)That's why all her fundraisers used to have $2700 tickets. She started running out of $2700 donors in November, and has been lowering the "ticket price" ever since.
But don't worry. Soros gave $8M to Clinton's PAC in one day. So she still raised more money than us unwashed folk that give to Sanders.
