President Barack Obama will not endorse a candidate in the Democratic primary, but there is no doubt where he is leaning, according to former White House press secretary Jay Carney.
"I think the president has signaled while still remaining neutral that he supports Secretary Clinton's candidacy and would prefer to see her as the nominee," Carney said on CNN Wednesday following coverage of the president's speech to the Illinois state Senate in Springfield.
Obama will not "officially embrace her unless and until it's clear she is going to be the nominee," Carney said.
"I think he is maintaining that tradition of not intervening in a party primary," he added. "But I don't think there is any doubt that he wants Hillary to win the nomination and believes she would be the best candidate in the fall and the most effective as president in carrying forward what he has achieved."

That makes perfect sense. Why would president Obama not want his former SOS to carry on his legacy? Sanders wasn't even a member of the party until he decided to run for president.

(278 posts)We're deep into the election cycle and the main topic being "Establishment vs Outsider"
Now, considering the events of the past ~9 years, who then would you guess the establishment to be made up of??
(Here's a hint.....NOT Bernie)
Paulie
(8,462 posts)good luck with that though.

(58,364 posts)out from under the President's direct supervision, for all practical purposes creating a shadow government while causing major headaches for Obama's administration as a result.
Another reason might be the resultant FBI investigation which may or may not come to anything but it's still a Sword of Damocles hanging over Hillary's head.
Thanks for the thread, Beacool.

(4,960 posts)Doesn't bother me one bit. I like President Obama. I think he's done some good things and has also proposed some things I find contrary to my values (the "Grand Bargain" that thank goodness never happend). I worked very hard to get him elected and I worked very hard at the beginning of healthcare negotiations when I thought we would have a public option. I stopped working for him when he gave that up and met privately with pharmaceutical companies to agree not to negotiate pricing.
I think he is doing much more in the last few years that I have wanted him to - since he has basically finally realized the Republicans will give him nothing. I applaud many of his achievements.
But I'm not blinded by love for any candidate. Sanders is my preferred candidate and I will work my ass off for him now. I'm a Bernie Sanders supporter and happy to be one.
What Obama wants means zip to me. I know what I want.

(30,099 posts)What I find interesting is the timing of Jay Carney, today....making this even
more clear than last time. Interesting, indeed, but not surprising.

(30,249 posts)There are posts that are mentioning that they've heard people say that if Sanders doesn't get the nomination they would vote for Trump. Yeah, that's going to advance a Democratic agenda.
