Bernie Wins Women

"The idea of electing the first female president failed to sway New Hampshire women on Tuesday. They voted heavily in favor of democratic socialist Bernie Sanders in the state's Democratic primary.

As of 10:30 p.m., exit polls showed 55 percent of the state's women voted for Sanders, compared with 44 percent for Hillary Clinton. Sanders had an even stronger lead among men, winning 66 percent of their vote, compared with Clinton's 32 percent.

Women's rights groups and prominent feminists tried hard to sway young women toward Clinton leading up to the New Hampshire primary. Planned Parenthood, NARAL Pro-Choice America, former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and feminist icon Gloria Steinem all endorsed Clinton and emphasized her unique potential to break the glass ceiling and champion women's reproductive rights as leader of the free world.

But Steinem and Albright may have inadvertently turned voters off with their harsh, scolding remarks about young women's priorities. Steinem said girls were only supporting Sanders because "that's where the boys are," and Albright said there's a "special place in hell for women who don't help each other."

Democratic women in New Hampshire ultimately bucked the advice of the first-generation feminists and chose Sanders, the anti-establishment candidate.

Liz Wilson, 37, of Epping, New Hampshire, told The Huffington Post that while she believes "women leadership brings a better approach to the job," Sanders' policies ultimately resonated more.

"I admire experience and service," Wilson said. "But Bernie’s approach to policy is more in line with my personal approach.”
