Rep. Jim Clyburn hints at endorsing Hillary Clinton

COLUMBIA — U.S. Rep. Jim Clyburn, the third most powerful Democrat in Washington, told The Washington Post he is considering endorsing a candidate before the Feb. 27 primary — and hinted that it might be Hillary Clinton.

Clyburn, D-S.C., who previously said he intended to remain neutral in the campaign, told the Post his wife and daughters — who are Clinton supporters — have asked him to use his influence to let South Carolinians know who he supports.

He told the paper it did not seem plausible he would endorse Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, a self-described democratic socialist.

If Clyburn chooses to endorse Clinton, it could put to rest the tension that formed during the 2008 presidential election where the congressman accused Bill Clinton of using racially tinged comments from the former president regarding the viability of President Barack Obama’s campaign. Clyburn remained officially neutral in that race.
