Chris Hayes: Hillary has no message, Bernie's campaign is stellar

He listed the things Bernie was running on, like 4-5 things, then said Hillary is running on "I will do a great job. I know what needs to be done and I will do a great job at it." But doesn't say anything about what she plans to do. He said she has no message. Not at all.

Then he said Bernie's campaign is the best run campaign out of all of them this year. Everything about it is top notch, ground game, message, everything.

They know the people have spoken and I think they don't want to end up on the wrong side of history and become completely irrelevant.

Wed Feb 10, 2016, 01:23 AM

She is not stupid and she has loads of political experience. She knows what's wrong with her campaign. It's not negative enough. We got some indication of the new direction this past week, when she took a couple direct shots at Sanders, and her campaign went after him more aggressively. This was not successful, so expect to see a much more negative approach in the next week or so. This is what politicians do when they feel pressured.

Another tactic would be to concentrate on issues, to tell people exactly what she wants, and how she will go about getting it. So far, it's been a lot of, "I can get things done, and I'm the only one who can." If she combines a focus on the issues with a negative campaign, the approach will be both more specific and more negative. For example, "I can get guns out of the hands of criminals and Senator Sanders won't even try." Something like that.

Sanders has to keep aiming at a political revolution, the idea that he will work for a government with a much different emphasis than what we experienced in the last 35 years. As a progressive, he has to sell people on the idea that government can do things, even big things, for the people. And he has to convince voters that the federal government can accomplish things such as reform of city police departments. Some of this will be a tough sell in a nation accustomed to the idea that the federal government is useless and powerless to change things, but many people seem to be tired of the Reagan legacy and the notion that we pay taxes to help widen the wealth gap. We'll see if there is some kind of tipping point approaching. If so, we will have President Sanders. If not, it will be President Clinton.

to get govt out of the hands of Wall Street. That resonates with voters right now. They know what's up. He is showing them with his campaign how he can do it. Who thought someone could outraise Hillary on small donations without a Super Pac? No one. He's doing it.

With that as an example, the people can have faith that he is true to his word and will continue to accomplish what people think is impossible. He believes you shoot for what you want and he will do that. I don't think he has all that much convincing to do. Democrats in general don't feel govt can't do anything, that's the Republican schtick.

Someone else said (could have been MSNBC) "I asked the Clinton campaign what they stand for or what this campaign is about and they can't tell me. But I know what Bernie stands for and what he's about."

Someone else (paraphrased) "Hillary is like Ted Kennedy when they asked him why he was running for president" (Ted fumbled and couldn't provide much of an answer)

Someone else remarked about the two speeches tonight. Hillary's was full of "I .. , I ..., T .." and Bernie's was full of "We ..., We ..., We ..." I think that's roughly a fair observation - that's how Hillary's speeches come off.

Hillary is probably Washington's top academy award winning political actress. But her shine pales when she's beside someone who is authentic. Hillary comes off as first and foremost about Hillary. Bernie comes off as if he sincerely cares and I think he does.

Saw a Black voter in one of the network undecided groups. He made up his mind to support Bernie after his speech. When they asked him why, he said because of what Bernie said he'd do for reducing the incarceration of Blacks and Latinos. He said something like "I think he really meant it" As smooth as she can be sometimes, Hillary doesn't deliver that and I suspect it's because it isn't really there.

But it won't work for her because people know she doesn't mean it. If she did she would have been saying that all along. Plus she can't bring herself to not make this about her. She still keeps saying "I" all the time where as Bernie always says "we".

Her message the last month has been "No, we can't" and "Vote for me, I'm a woman and I can do this." But we don't know what she wants to do, especially since she keeps saying we can't do anything. Just like you just did. Negativity will never inspire enthusiasm. And that's why Bernie is getting all the enthusiasm and momentum. He energizes people, he makes them feel we can achieve our goals, we can dream and go after it. Then as we work towards it, bit by bit it will come to pass if we work together and stand strong together.

Feb 2016

Hillary's Concession Speech

In tonight’s concession speech, Hillary Clinton made grand declarations of her desire to get all the dirty money and secret Wall Street influence the hell out of politics. Which is to say, Hillary Clinton really wants Hillary Clinton out of politics.

Clinton started off by attempting to brush recent concerns about her Goldman Sachs connection under the rug, saying, “Now, Senator Sanders and I both want to get secret, unaccountable money out of politics.

Anyway, Hillary goes on:

We also agree that Wall Street can never be allowed to once again threaten Main Street. And I will fight to rein in Wall Street—and you know what? I know how to do it!

Yes, Hillary. We know you know how to do it. And you’ve got the money to prove it.

Wed Feb 10, 2016, 03:30 AM

It's a sad commentary on American education that so many people hear a phrase, don't know the origin of it, and therefore misspell a key word.

And for those who don't ride, to rein in a horse, is to bring a horse under control and/or slow it down.

Another commonly seen, incorrect phrase is "towing" the line, which should be "toe the line."

Meaning: To conform to an established standard or political program.

Early examples of 'toe the ...' have a nautical connection. In the 19th century, sailors were expected to prepare themselves for group punishment by standing in formation on deck and 'toeing the line' between boards - also called 'toeing the crack'. This usage is the earliest that I've found for 'toe the line' in print - from The Edinburgh Literary Journal, January - June 1831:

"The matter, therefore, necessarily became rather serious; and the whole gang of us being sent for on the quarter-deck, we were ranged in a line, each with his toes at the edge of a plank, according to the orthodox fashion of these gregarious scoldings, technically called toe-the-line matches."

Whatevs! It's a great night to be a Bernie Sanders supporter!
