By contrast, McCain's getoffmylawnness annoyed me. Mostly because he wasn't just old/grumpy, but a bit unstable.

but Americans do love cranky old Jewish guys. And most of us are feeling pretty cranky as well after 35 years of Reaganomics!

I think the poster was talking about the next door neighbor you've never really known, who when you finally meet him, sits you on the porch and talks to you like he's known you for a very long time. Over lemonade. Over time you grow to relish sitting with him on the porch. All it took was for you go get to know him.
