(1,975 posts)That if it looks like a Trump/Sanders ticket come November he will jump in as an independent. My question is, whose votes will he take away from?

(1,975 posts)I say, bring it on!!!
Bloomberg will run as a 3rd party candidate now that Hillary's campaign is collapsing, IMO.

MADem
(135,425 posts)He could be running against Bloomberg and Cruz.
The only way I would be concerned is if it were Kasich. Otherwise I think Bernie would do well.
MADem
(135,425 posts)I think Bloomberg is only in if it's Sanders v. Trump or Cruz.
At least that is the impression the NYT left me with--their reporting might not be accurate.

(509 posts)Here's the thing. The timeline to get onto the ballots is passing or has passed in many states. The math doesn't add up for anyone to enter the actual primary.
Someone is likely going to run as an independent ala Bloomberg, but I don't think this is an election that he'll stand a chance. Who does he hurt? If the nominee is Bernie, the current polling suggests he hurts Bernie and throws the election to Trump.

(17,064 posts)If we assume a Sanders-Trump-Bloomberg race, the establishment of both Democrats and Republicans likely go to Bloomberg. Very few independents, as they are mostly on the edges, not the middle. Minorities probably go to Sanders. That's it, that's his total support. Probably not enough to win, and the party establishments backing a third party candidate together only solidifies Sanders and Trump's arguments about a broken political system and probably means the end of both parties.
Trumps support - it's the same bunch of crazies he has, minus the GOP establishment. Not enough to win.
Sanders - still has the Progressive/Liberal Democratic votes. Picks up some libertarian votes. Large and enthusiastic youth vote. Probably gets strong minority votes...I know they hate Trump, and probably not be too thrilled with Bloomberg.
So, I'm thinking that poll is making erroneous assumptions. First, in assuming numbers of Minorities will support the Democratic establishment in supporting Bloomberg as a third party candidate...I suspect that won't happen. Second, in underestimating the size and commitment of the youth vote for Sanders. I think Sanders wins by a head.
Dems2002
(509 posts)I don't disagree with your assumptions. Right now, I am curious about how talk radio and fox news are dealing with Bernie. I'd like to see what their attacks would do to his strong supoort amongst Independent voters. It is really impressive and is really the repudiation of the one group of voters Hillary won...those who make over 200k.
PFunk1
(185 posts)I think he's either gonna stay neutral or support Bernie.
However it's now time to start expecting Bloomberg to jump in sometime in March. Not to win, but IMO hopefully to take enough votes away from the democratic primary winner to allow a establishment repug to win.
