Bernie Sanders: "Southern Democrats are tired of being abandoned by the party"

“These are guys getting hung up on gay marriage issues.” “They’re getting hung up on abortion issues. And it is time we started focusing on the economic issues that bring us together: Defending Social Security, defending Medicare, making sure that Medicaid is not cut, that veterans’ programs are not cut.”

Should we put less emphasis on abortion and gay rights to attract more southerners?

1. This is from 2013, not a campaign statement

2. You should include all of the quotes. It does not say that we should put less emphasis on those. Had you included the portion before that, he correlates it to how Southerners frequently vote against their own interests.

The democratic party has alienated southern voters by putting too much emphasis on gay marriage and abortion.

Has that changed since he started running for president?

is he saying that Southern Democrats have hang-ups about getting involved legislatively on abortion?

And as far as gay rights, I have no idea what is being said here - who is getting hung up, on what specifically they are getting hung up...?

I'm apparently not getting the memos of how much good they are doing for us, but I do get request for funds from Baldwin.
