are so cynical they assume everyone is a crook - some of them just haven't been caught yet... and so that justifies in their minds support their favourite crook of choice... because why not... everyone's a crook.

I think one big reason that this is starting to change is the internet and access to more information. When I was young everyone read a daily newspaper and watched the nightly news. Most young people today do neither. It was much easier to manipulate public opinion then.
