MANCHESTER, N.H. -- Hours after former President Bill Clinton caught the attention of Democrats all across the country with the debut of his stinging critique of Bernie Sanders in a 50-minute stemwinder in Milford, N.H., one of Hillary Clintons top allies piled on to his critique and previewed new attacks on the Vermont senator.
I think that its about time that voters got a glimpse of reality, which is whats happening, and President Clinton did that. It was a strong call to arms, particularly to her supporters and I include myself in that who have stayed too quiet in the face of those character attacks, and thats over. What she correctly called the artful smear, we need to call attention to, David Brock, the founder of the Correct The Record rapid response and opposition research group that coordinates with the Clinton campaign, told POLITICO on Monday morning. Senator Sanders is trying to live in the purity bubble, and it needs to be burst."
The comments from the conservative-turned-Clinton ally followed the delivery of the former presidents ratcheted-up rhetoric just before the Super Bowl Sunday. The strongly-worded speech landed not long after tensions reach a boiling point in the Democratic primary, particularly after the two candidates clashed onstage at Thursday nights debate, when Clinton said Sanders suggestions that she is beholden to Wall Street was an artful smear."
While some Clinton allies were happy to see the Big Dog turn attack dog, others had immediate flashbacks to 2008, when his harsh criticisms of Barack Obama backfired, particularly in South Carolina. But Clinton loyalists point to 2012 when the former president stepped in to help Obama as a more favorable comparison to Clintons role. (Sanders campaign didnt respond to a request for a response to Clinton or Brock.)
When youre making a revolution, you cant be too careful with the facts, Clinton said on Sunday night, not mentioning Sanders name, but alluding to him throughout the speech a break from his standard lines about how his wife is a positive change-maker. The New Hampshire I campaigned in really cared that you knew what you were doing, and how it was paid for."

But this dismissal of someone who has character and integrity, and generates enthusiasm for those qualities, as "purity sounds like the worst fucking Republican you can dredge up.
I am waiting for the Clinton Camp to start attacking Political Correctness any day.

(58,364 posts)Bernie's never said he's pure, but his whopping $1,800 in speaking fees and his free latte give him room to ponder about something we all know to be true: money is ruining our country because it influences way too many politicians who are supposed to be working for us.
If a Republican had taken this ill-gotten fortune, DU would be apocalyptic, but since it's Hillary, it's OK? Now we know why so many are tired of Establishment Politics.

"Purity" has not one fucking thing to do with those things. Evidently that is really too hard and complicated for some to understand.

(6,960 posts)... and you'll be sunk up to your chin in slime.
You know, Bill Clinton has always been a pretty good surrogate for other candidates, but being a spokesperson for your own spouse is just a very different deal. Bill Clinton was good on the stump for Obama after the convention, but he was not a good surrogate for Hillary eight years ago during the primaries.
And Bill Clinton as an attack dog against a competitor for the Democratic Party nomination for president is unseemly for a former President of the United States. Furthermore, I hate to say it, but Bill Clinton is just not the same Bill Clinton he was even eight years ago -- he is clearly older, less articulate, and less persuasive.
Then there is David Brock. Hillary Clinton should ask him to please take an eleven month vacation to Australia ... Brock is just icky. I guess I remember the Clinton scandals of twenty years ago and Brock's role then ... I'll never shake that out of my mind.
And, finally, this "purity" line is already backfiring (so please keep on using it, Clintons). I want a president with principles and a willingness to fight strongly for the things that will help me and my country ... if that is "purity" then I want more of it.
