I have flannel shirts, some of them plaid. I even used to have a red and black one similar to that, although with thinner stripes.

They are work shirts.

A guy worth 80 mil (who's wife is worth an additional 31 mil) should not be wearing that shirt out to a public event.

It is more of a costume than an outfit.

When have you ever seen him dress like that before?

A public speaking event is not an appropriate event to do so.

Remember, this guy gets paid hundreds of thousands of dollars an hour to do this for other rich people.

Donning this costume for the yokels is inappropriate.

Not a strong attempt to turn this around on me, it really did fail badly.

http://howhegotthere.blogspot.com/2009/12/chapter-5.html

In Krugman’s correctly scornful assessment, the press corps turned the Bush-Gore race into a "campaign about clothing!" In recalling the campaign through this lens, Krugman most strongly evokes this “month of Wolf,” in which ludicrous claims about Gore’s wardrobe entered the public discourse–and stuck. (Naomi Wolf told Al Gore to wear earth tones! Sadly, there’s much more below.) During this episode, the press corps behaved as it did throughout this campaign; as a group, they used bogus facts about consummate trivia to advance pre-conceived tales about character. In this case, the trivia concerned this candidate’s clothing–his boots, his suits, his polo shirts, the number of buttons on his suit jackets (three). The height at which he hemmed his pants. The way he wore casual clothing to some events, business attire to others.

You might read the whole book, or read the original real time critic of campaign 2000 here.

was using my university as a stepping stone.

I can tell you he never once wore plaid in the University of Tennessee's inner administrative sanctum.

It was one of the few times I really had to struggle to stay impartial.

I once spent a whole day with Fred Thompson riding around the Great Smoky Mountains when Congress was considering making park-goers pay a user fee (it was rejected) because I was writing a story on the legislation and his visit (when I was working professionally). While my politics were not in the same ball park as his, he was, at least, a nice and considerate guy. Lamar was just what I called him in my title: a prick.

Alexander royally screwed up the state education system & used it as a springboard to a cabinet position in HW's administration.
Sorry your tenure at UT was tainted by his smug prickness.

Thompson actually practiced law for a significant number of years, which requires the ability to connect w/other people on a human level. While Lamar only practiced for 3-4 yrs, spending the majority of his professional life in DC. That probably just increased his prickness. LOL

Back in the day we flannel wearing locals would head up to the ski slopes at Hunter Mountain. We would wear slacks, button up shirts, and nice shoes. We were going out after making sawdust all week, or doing whatever. Those driving up from the city would do the opposite; they wanted to look like they belonged. The role reversals were comical - anyone dressed like a lumberjack was a joke to us, just as certainly were we to them.
