Chelsea Clinton is a Very Wealthy Woman...

(Her salary while working for NBC News is a shocker @ $600.000...and now she's picking up and extra $300.000 working for Barry Diller? and who knows what Clinton Foundation is paying her!)

Why is the press treating a wealthy, 35-year-old political operative like she's still a White House kid?

By Jack Shafer

2/05/2016

The coverage threshold falls lower still if a grown-up White House kid expands her own public profile, as Chelsea Clinton most definitely has. She has maintained a role as adviser and advocate inside the Clinton family’s political dynasty since leaving Stanford University. In late 2011, she crossed over to the dark and often invasive art of journalism, working at NBC News as a special correspondent ($600,000/year) until August 2014.

Today, Chelsea serves as vice chair of the politically controversial Clinton Foundation, which has raised $2 billion since 2001. She’s a board member at Barry Diller’s IAC (paid a reported $300,000 a year, plus stock awards). She charges $65,000 per speech. Last fall, she published a book on “empowerment” for kids. She’s powerful. She exercises influence. She’s all grown up, soon to be the mother of two. If she isn’t newsworthy, nobody is.

As is her right, Chelsea picks and chooses how to respond to the press. Had you lived through the White House sex scandals as she did, you might not have affection for the press, either. For years, when approached by reporters asking questions, she would politely demur. In 2007, while stumping for her mother’s presidential campaign, shaking hands with voters and posting for photos, Chelsea spun her advocacy from the softest cotton—with no message exceeding the “vote for my mom, she’s the best” variety. She worked hard, traveling thousands of highway miles, visiting more than 100 campuses and dialing up to 60 names a day in support of the Clinton campaign.

---snip

As Vanity Fair reported, in early 2008 the Clinton campaign placed “warning calls” to David Shuster, then at MSNBC, the day after he asked her a couple of questions (that went unanswered) at a campaign event. Chelsea, age 27, was off-limits, the campaign said.

As the Hillary Clinton 2016 campaign gathered steam, Chelsea agreed to sit for interviews with the press, but most of them were of the softball variety with Fusion, Ellen DeGeneres and Extra. But whenever the questions turn probing, Chelsea tends to shut down. At a April 2015 Council on Foreign Relations forum in New York, ABC News anchor Juju Chang asked her to respond to the news stories that criticized the Clinton Foundation's fundraising methods. “Not surprisingly, Chelsea punted,” wrote the Daily Beast’s Lloyd Grove about the session. Instead, she discussed all the good work the foundation does. Grove continued, “Needless to say, I was thwarted in my efforts to ask Chelsea a follow-up question as she left the building after patiently greeting a receiving line of admirers.”

------snip

Perhaps Chelsea avoids serious talks with the press because she’s smart enough to know that words betray her when she speaks extemporaneously, as she did in the middle of January when a young voter asked her how to mobilize young American’s for the Clinton campaign. Chelsea dug a hole, jumped into it, and dug deeper to attack Bernie Sanders as someone who wants to “dismantle Obamacare, dismantle the CHIP program, dismantle Medicare and private insurance.”

Long past the time of when we all defended her from the Vile/Disgusting RW attacks against her.

She has put herself into the Campaign and now is in Charge of the Clinton Foundation (brought in to clean it up after there were financial irregularities). Her husband works on Wall Street for a Hedge Fund that has had problems and his father was prosecuted for some irregular financial dealsings on Wall Street, also.

I think we all remember the little Chelsea that should never have been attacked as she was. But, at 35 years old and having been a Political Op for her Mother in '08 and Now...and her untruthful attack on Bernie, plus all the money she has made as catalogued in the OP....it's time for Chelsea to be treated as the Grown Woman she is and part of her familiy's Political Campaign because of her invested interests and participation in it.

So it is puzzling how the press still treats her like a child.

But what do you expect from a corporate-run campaign? The Clinton campaign expects to get all of the profits from Chelsea on the campaign trail, but take none of the losses. Must have learned that from the banksters.

Chelsea was a Political Spokesperson for her Mother's '08 Run and is now on the Campaign Trail against Bernie Sanders as was mentioned in the OP about how she totally misinterpreted Bernie's views when she campaigned for her Mother in Iowa. Look at the money she has made and would she have made that money if she didn't have Power & Influence?

What the Clintons have done by turning their political careers into a vast moneymaking enterprise, it's not a value-neutral activity. The money isn't just about buying influence. The money also physically moves people, from one side of an imaginary line to another.

You will never catch Bernie Sanders standing in a room as a paid guest of a bank under investigation for ripping billions off pensioners and investors, addressing the audience in the first-person plural. He doesn't spend enough time with that kind of crowd to be so colloquial.

The Clintons meanwhile have by now taken so much money that when they stand in a room full of millionaires and billionaires, they can use the word "we" and not have it sound odd. The money has irrevocably moved them to that side of the ropeline. On that side of the line, public anger isn't legitimate, but something to be managed and waited out, just as Lloyd suggests.

Then why could FDR, or JFK? Or Bill Clinton for that matter. I recall in the 92 campaign that Bill knew the price of a gallon of milk - Poppy Bush did not. Chelsea no doubt was raised to care about the average American FCOL she lived in the WH 8 years and is raised by liberal, successful parents who gave their careers to public service. The $$ stuff is crap as anyone who just wants money will not go into politics - there is a lot more money to be made in the private sector.

And, it's not just Chelsea...Didn't one of the Bush Daughters work for a Major Network...probably pulling down a huge salary like that?

It's the Media, Military, Industrial Complex that is allowing this kind of of Nepotism and Influence peddling.

I'm not trashing their Birth Right for getting these Cushy Jobs in the Corporate World...I'm pointing out that most of the Rest of America's Children would not be so Lucky to have that kind of influence put in place by their Parents.

That is what Bernie is talking about (or, would talk about if he could)...because to speak of Political Privilege would cause even MORE attacks than he is dealing with...talking about Wall Street Privilege which he is under attack already about!

He would be seen as "Attacking the Children of Political Privilege!" That is a "No...No" in Privileged Circles in Today's America.

Edward Maurice "Ed" Mezvinsky (/mɛzˈvɪnski/; born January 17, 1937) is an American former politician and congressman. A Democrat, he represented Iowa's 1st congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives for two terms (1973–77).

Mezvinsky grew up in Ames, Iowa, and played high school football there. He received his law degree from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law (1965). After being elected to the Iowa Legislature (1968), he lost a race for Congress in 1970, then won in 1972. He made several unsuccessful U.S. Senate attempts in the 1980s.

In 2001, he was convicted of 31 charges of felony fraud, and served five years in federal prison.[4]

In 2010, he became father-in-law to Chelsea Clinton.

Criminal activities

Beginning in the early 1990s, Mezvinsky was duped by a wide variety of 419 scams. According to a federal prosecutor, Mezvinsky was conned using "just about every different kind of African-based scam we’ve ever seen."[10] The scams promise that the victim will receive large profits, but first a small down payment is required. To raise the funds needed to front the money for the fraudulent investment schemes he was being offered, Mezvinsky tapped his network of former political contacts and dropping the name of the Clinton family to convince unwitting marks to give him money.[11]

In March 2001, Mezvinsky was indicted and later pleaded guilty to 31 of 69 felony charges of bank fraud, mail fraud, and wire fraud.[12] Nearly $10 million was involved in the crimes. Shortly after his indictment, he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, but the judge at his trial disallowed a mental illness defense.[5] He served his time at Federal Prison Camp, Eglin.[13] Mezvinsky, Federal Bureau of Prisons # 55040-066, was released in April 2008.[14] He remained on federal probation until 2011, and as of 2010 still owed $9.4 million in restitution to his victims.[15]
